Hari Setyawan, who took the Humanities Sciences Study Program (Archaeology doctoral program), conducted an Open Doctoral Promotion Examination on Wednesday, May 22, 2024 at 10.00 WIB in the Multimedia Room on the Second Floor of the R.M. Margono Djojohadikusumo Building, Faculty of Cultural Sciences UGM. The Team of Examiners entered the room followed by Promovenda / Promovendus, Chair of the Examination Team Prof. Dr. Heddy Shry Ahimsa-Putra, M.A., M.Phil. opened the meeting to hold the Open Examination. The Examination Team consists of: Dr. Niken Wirasanti, M.Si. (Promoter), Dr. Mimi Savitri, M.A. (Co-Promoter), Prof. Dr. Purnomo, M.S. (Faculty of Biology UGM), Dr. Tjahjono Prasodjo, M.A., and Prof. Dr. Timbul Haryono, M.Sc.

Mr. Hari Setyawan, S.S., M.T. on the occasion presented his dissertation entitled “Pemaknaan Tumbuhan pada Relief Karmawibhangga Candi Borobudur: Perspektif Semiotika Peirce”. Narrative reliefs at Borobudur Temple are archaeological data that can be used, among others, as data for reconstructing the environment of Ancient Java. Hisresearch discusses the law of karma and the depiction of plants in narrative reliefs to be identified by species, interpreted based on inscription sources and relevant literary texts to find out their meaning using Charles Sanders Peirce Semiotics. The novelty in the research is to get an explanation of how the karma scene is depicted on the Karmawibhangga relief and why the plants depicted are very varied in species.

After the Team of Examiners considered the results of the examination, the Team of Examiners stated that the dissertation of Mr. Hari Setyawan PASSED the doctoral program at the Faculty of Humanities, Universitas Gadjah Mada with the title Cum Laude / Praise. This is also based on the consideration of lecture results, dissertation grades, and study period. Dr. Hari Setyawan, S.S., M.T. is the 6216th doctor to pass the exam at Universitas Gadjah Mada, the 443rd doctor to pass the exam at the Faculty of Cultural Sciences, Universitas Gadjah Mada, the 403rd doctor to pass the exam in the Humanities Sciences Study Program, and the 21st doctor in Archaeology. Congratulations and success to all new doctors. Hopefully the knowledge will be more useful!

Praise to God Almighty, for His blessings and grace we gathered on Tuesday, May 21, 2024, at the Soegondo Auditorium on the 7th floor of the Faculty of Cultural Sciences UGM in good health and happiness, in the context of “Soft Skill Training for Undergraduate Graduation Candidates of the Faculty of Cultural Sciences” Universitas Gadjah Mada, Period III of the 2023/2024 Academic Year. Ferdeo, was the student in charge of guiding the softskill training that afternoon. To start the event, the audience listened to remarks delivered by the Head of the Community Service and Alumni Unit, Dr. Sajarwa, M.Hum. Next, there was also an announcement from the Coordinator of Academic and Student Affairs, Mr. Yusuf Sulistiyo, S.Pi., M.M. Next was the announcement made by the Career Development Center Team, which on this occasion was represented by Mr. Dama Qoriy Arjanto, S.S., M.Sc.

Moving on to the next agenda, the core agenda on that day, namely the debriefing session for undergraduate graduation candidates of the Faculty of Cultural Sciences, Universitas Gadjah Mada, Period III of the 2023/2024 Academic Year. In this session, the event was guided by a moderator, namely Dr. phil. Ramada Akmal, S.S., M.A., who is a lecturer at the Indonesian Language and Literature Study Program. The speaker who filled the session was Mr. Ari Bagus Panuntun, S.S., M.A., who is the owner and founder of the contemporary bookstore “Warung Sastra”, who is also a lecturer in the French Language and Literature Study Program. The session went smoothly and it is hoped that the knowledge that has been shared can be a blessing and useful for all prospective graduates. Amen. Before closing, the event was continued with socialization delivered by the team from Teleperformance.

Yogyakarta, April 24, 2024 – The Association of Arabic Literature Students UGM (IKMASA) held a Halal Bihalal event on Wednesday, April 24, 2024, at Siti Baroroh Building A201, Faculty of Cultural Sciences, Universitas Gadjah Mada. This event is a regular agenda of IKMASA conducted during the month of Shawwal and is mandatory for all Arabic Literature students at Universitas Gadjah Mada.

The event was attended by Dr. Zulfa Purnamawati, S.S., M.Hum., Head of the Arabic Literature Program, Arief Budiman, S.S., M.A., an Arabic Literature lecturer, and the speaker, who is an alumnus of Arabic Literature UGM, Ustadz Ibnus-Sakan Al-Faishal, S.S., M.Sc.

The event began with an opening by the MC, followed by welcoming speeches and the recitation of the Shawwal pledge by the Head of the Program, the Arabic Literature lecturer, the Chair of IKMASA 2024/2025, and representatives of the 2021, 2022, and 2023 cohorts. This was followed by a presentation by the speaker, moderated Q&A sessions, games, the presentation of souvenirs, a documentation session, and concluded with a closing.

The agenda discussed the theme “Weaving Harmony in Togetherness, to Strengthen the Foundation of Unity,” which can be summarized with the following quotes:

“Halal bihalal is a cultural product in Indonesia initiated by Abdul Wahab Chasbullah. It was first held in 1948 at the Merdeka Palace to reconcile DI/TII, Masyumi, Kartosuwiryo, and others to prevent division at that time.” – Ustadz Ibnus-Sakan Al-Faishal, S.S., M.Sc.

“The blessing of halal bihalal is that it can strengthen the bonds of friendship between one another, between students and lecturers, maintain harmony, and reinforce togetherness.” – Ustadz Ibnus-Sakan Al-Faishal, S.S., M.Sc.

It is hoped that through this general lecture with the theme “Weaving Harmony in Togetherness, to Strengthen the Foundation of Unity,” Arabic Literature students will be able to maintain their bonds of friendship, thereby creating a sense of togetherness among each other.

From Campus to Community: Arabic Literature Students of Gadjah Mada University Intern at Dompet Dhuafa

Yogyakarta, 27th of January 2024 – In order to practice knowledge and serve society, several students of the Arabic Literature Study Program, Department of Language and Literature, Faculty of Cultural Sciences, Gadjah Mada University, had completed an internship program at Dompet Dhuafa. This internship program was an opportunity for students to go directly into the field and contribute to various community empowerment programs initiated by Dompet Dhuafa.

Dompet Dhuafa’s agenda which involved interns included collecting and processing poverty data, distributing aid to people in need, education about health, economic empowerment, and educational outreach. Internship students were also provided with experience in collecting donations and finding donors to support Dompet Dhuafa programs.

The internship program at Dompet Dhuafa was a concrete example of the implementation of the Tri Dharma of Higher Education, namely education, research and community service. With this program, it was hoped that UGM Arabic Literature students can become agents of social change who were competent, have integrity and care for others.

Promoting Good Health and Well-Being: The Faculty of Cultural Sciences’ Weekly Sport Agenda

Every Friday, the Faculty of Cultural Sciences engages in a regular exercise activity starting from 07:00 to 09:00 AM. This activity serves as one of the responsibilities that is aligned with SDGs 3: Good Health and Well-Being.

In an atmosphere full of spirit and enthusiasm, participants gather in the campus area to engage in various types of sports, such as aerobics, table tennis, and badminton. Not only that, some of them choose to participate in a brisk walk around the university, cycling, and practicing tennis on the UGM’s tennis courts.

This activity has become a regular agenda at the Faculty of Cultural Sciences which aims to show its commitment to promote health and well-being within the community. This activity does not only give physical benefits but also builds a stronger relationship within the community, and improves mental health.
