Kamasutra (Family of Regional Indonesian Literatures Students) is an organization under the Department of Regional Indonesian Literatures, FCS, UGM. Since it was first established, this student organization has changed its name numerous times. It has been known as KMSD (Family of Regional Languages Students) and KMSN (Family of Regional Indonesian Literatures Students); since 3 March 2005 it has been Kamasutra (Family of Regional Indonesian Literatures Students). This name change was done in response to the change in the study program’s name: it was originally known as the Javanese Literature Department, but has since become the Regional Indonesian Literatures Department. This organization functions as a vehicle for Regional Indonesian Literatures students to organize and express themselves in academia, society, and cultural life, particularly in relation to local Indonesian cultures.
All active Regional Indonesian Literatures students are members of Kamasutra. The leadership of Kamasutra changes annually. The selection of the chair of Kamasutra is based on a decision made during the annual meeting. The administrative structure of Kamasutra consists of the chair, deputy, secretary, treasurer, and six divisions: social and community, research and development, Sembadra (in charge of the student publication Senthir and academic journal Badrawada), Gamasutra (gamelan group), public relations, and Sanorpala (Nature and Sports Lovers of the Regional Indonesian Literatures Department). Each division allows students to develop their own potential.
The society and community division was only established by the leadership this year. The goal of this new division is bring the organization in-line with the Trifecta of Schools of Higher Learning, one point of which emphasizes public service. It is hoped that, with this division, students of regional Indonesian literatures can take part in society and apply their knowledge.
The public relations division handles communications with other organizations, from the faculty to the national level. The gamelan group is a space for students to develop their potential through gamelan and macapat. Sembadra serves to develop students’ journalistic potential, whereas Research and Development serves to develop students’ understanding of research. Sanorpala allows students to develop their potential in sports.
Aside from these above activities, Kamasutra holds routine monthly and annual activities, including Selasa Legen, Gugur Gunung Kamasutra, and Abhiseka Kramasisya. Selasa Legen is an activity held every Legi Tuesday in which students and lecturers of the regional Indonesian literatures department discuss and show the results of their research. Gugur Gunung Kamasutra was established in 2010; its activities include national seminars, gamelan festivals, and the Ramayana Dance. Abhiseka Kramasisya, meanwhile, is a socialization night meant to welcome and provide suggestions to new students of the regional Indonesian literatures department.
