HEADLINESNews ReleaseSDGs 17: Partnerships for the GoalsSDGs 4: Quality EducationStudent's Activity Wednesday, 12 March 2025

Yogyakarta, 17/02/2025 – Penerbit Erlangga, one of Indonesia’s largest companies in the printing and publishing industry, has once again launched the Merdeka Belajar Kampus Merdeka (MBKM) internship program for college students. This program is designed to enhance literacy competencies and provide hands-on experience in the publishing world, covering areas such as editing, graphic design, and book marketing. Elsyam Fudhail Azka, a student from the Arabic Study Program, Faculty of Cultural Sciences, Universitas Gadjah Mada (UGM), had the opportunity to intern in the Madrasah Division, Islamic Studies Department at Penerbit Erlangga.

Occurring between September and December 2024, the MBKM program allows students to be mentored by experienced professionals, helping them develop critical thinking, communication, and project management skills. Through practical experience and guidance, students gain insights into producing high-quality, reader-friendly books, ensuring that content is well-written, easy to understand, and adheres to the Indonesian Spelling System General Manual (PUEBI).

Beyond skill development, this internship program also provides students with opportunities to build professional networks and understand the dynamics of Indonesia’s literacy industry. Many alumni who have participated in internships at Erlangga Publishing have successfully pursued careers in publishing and related sectors. Through this program, students not only gain valuable work experience but also develop a deeper awareness of the importance of literacy and education in advancing society.

Active participation in various projects and editorial processes offers students a unique and enriching experience, while also reflecting Erlangga Publishing’s commitment to supporting and contributing to the improvement of Indonesia’s education system and the development of young talents. With the presence of the MBKM program, it is hoped that students will gain real benefits, inspiring new innovations in the fields of literacy and publishing in Indonesia.

Two New Lectures with Prof. Sabine Troeger

HEADLINESNews ReleaseSDGs 17: Partnerships for the GoalsSDGs 4: Quality Education Wednesday, 12 March 2025

Yogyakarta, 10/3/2025 – The Department of Anthropology is once again offering a special opportunity for its students by hosting joint classes with Professor Emeritus Sabine Troeger from the University of Bonn. This time, Professor Sabine is introducing two new courses:

  • “Healthy Environment in the Era of Anthropocene: Human-Nature Relation, When Humans Have Become the Dominant Force Shaping Earth’s Bio-Physical Composition and Processes”
  • “The Good Tourist—Images and Interpretation on the Side of the Visited Agents, Communities, and Individuals in Jogja Environments.”

Just like previous courses, these will follow a block system, with alternating schedules between the two classes. Running from February to April, the classes are open to both undergraduate and graduate students of Anthropology. More than just theoretical discussions, the program also includes a four-day fieldwork experience, where students will apply the PRA (Participatory, Reflection, and Action) method in real-world settings.

In the first half of the course, students will dive into PRA methodology and explore Bourdieu’s theory of habitus, which serves as a key foundation in community empowerment practices. The sessions are designed to be interactive, with Professor Sabine constantly encouraging students to actively engage in discussions and share their perspectives.

As the course progresses into the second half, things get even more dynamic. Learning moves beyond the classroom, and students head out into the field. Over four full days, they will interact directly with local communities, observe social dynamics firsthand, and put the PRA method into practice in real-life situations. This hands-on experience not only deepens their understanding but also offers valuable reflection on how theory and practice can come together to create sustainable empowerment initiatives.

This class is more than just an academic space—it is a platform for broadening perspectives and critical reflection. By combining theory, practice, and a human-centered approach, this course provides an invaluable learning experience for every participant.

First Gathering Kamastawa 2025: Fostering a Sense of Family with New Members

HEADLINESNews ReleaseSDGs 11: Sustainable cities and communitiesSDGs 17: Partnerships for the Goals Tuesday, 4 March 2025

Yogyakarta, 10/2/2025 – After conducting a series of registrations and member selection of the Students Association, finally on Monday, February 10th 2025, the Family of Javanese Language, Literature, and Culture Students (KAMASTAWA) held the first gathering for the new members of the association. This meeting was held in room 303 of the Margono Building, Faculty of Cultural Sciences in the afternoon after the class was finished.

The purpose of this First Gathering is to familiarize all members of HMJ Kamastawa so that in the future they will have a good and close relationship with each other. Familiarity and personal closeness can also support the performance and cooperation between members in an organization.

The event began with an opening by the MC, then continued with the introduction of the division heads and their members. After that, each division briefly presented its work program. After all divisions presented their work program plans, the event continued with an exchange of gifts and simple games. This event can be said to have run smoothly and had a warm atmosphere because of the enthusiasm of the new members. And in this First Gathering, each division was also asked to wear a certain color to distinguish between one division and another.

The First Gathering was relaxed and fun because it involved a bonding process without seniority walls between the 2023 and 2024 classes. It is important to eliminate the sense of seniority to foster a sense of kinship. Ultimately, this sense of kinship will bring a comfortable and safe organizational atmosphere for all its members. It is hoped that with this activity, the work programs that will be held by HMJ Kamastawa in the future can run smoothly without significant obstacles. It is also hoped that the dynamics and cooperation between division members can flow without obstacles.

Yogyakarta, 25/2/2025 – The Faculty of Humanities held an important workshop aimed at increasing collaboration between local governments and universities. The event was attended by the Regent of Siak Regency, Riau, as well as various stakeholders from the public and academic sectors. The workshop focused on the development of culture, tourism, and creative economy by utilising local potential to drive economic growth and development.

The workshop began with opening remarks from the Regent of Siak, who emphasised the importance of education in improving economic resources. He highlighted that universities have a crucial role in providing the knowledge and skills needed to empower local communities. By collaborating with local governments, educational institutions can help create a more sustainable and inclusive economic environment.

The participants engaged in discussions on the current state of cultural and tourism development in Siak. They explored how local resources can be optimised to increase the attractiveness of the area as a tourist destination. The Bupati emphasised that Siak is rich in cultural heritage and natural beauty, which if managed well, can contribute significantly to economic development.

One of the key topics discussed during the workshop was the integration of local culture into the education curriculum. Experts suggested that by incorporating local history and traditions into university programmes, students will be better equipped to promote and preserve their cultural identity. This approach not only enriches the educational experience but also fosters a sense of pride among the younger generation.

In addition, the workshop also highlighted the potential of the creative economy in driving economic growth. The participants discussed various creative industries, such as handicrafts, performing arts, and culinary, that could be further developed. The Regent encouraged local entrepreneurs to collaborate with universities to innovate and create new products that reflect Siak’s unique cultural identity.

In addition to the cultural and creative industries, the workshop also focused on sustainable tourism practices. Experts shared insights on how to develop tourism that respects local communities and the environment. The Regent emphasised that sustainable tourism is essential for long-term economic development and should be a priority for local governments and educational institutions.

The workshop concluded with a discussion on all stakeholders to work together in implementing the strategies discussed. Such collaboration is critical to achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), especially in terms of economic resources, education, and economic growth.

As participants left the workshop, there was a real sense of optimism about the future of Siak. The collaboration between the local government and universities is expected to pave the way for innovative solutions that will boost the cultural, tourism and creative sectors in the area.
