Literature in the Crosscurrents of Globalization: UGM Master’s Program in Literature Opens Call for Papers for the 2026 International Dissemination

News Release Friday, 3 July 2026

The Master’s Program in Literature, Faculty of Cultural Sciences, Universitas Gadjah Mada (UGM), is pleased to announce the Call for Papers (CFP) for its 2026 International Dissemination event, themed “Literature in the Crosscurrents of Globalization.” The event will be held online via Zoom Meeting on 4 November 2026, bringing together academics, researchers, lecturers, students, teachers, and literature enthusiasts from Indonesia and around the world to discuss the dynamic relationships between literature, culture, and society in today’s global context.

In addition to serving as an international academic forum, the event offers valuable publication opportunities, including publication in an ISBN-registered edited volume. Selected papers will also be recommended for publication in Poetika: Jurnal Ilmu Sastra (SINTA 2 accredited). Participation is free of charge, with no registration fee required.

The theme, “Literature in the Crosscurrents of Globalization,” reflects the increasingly intensive encounters among diverse cultures, values, and perspectives in the era of globalization. Advances in digital technology, human mobility, and transnational information exchange have transformed contemporary social and cultural life. Within this context, literature functions not only as a representation of reality but also as a space where identities, ideologies, traditions, and human experiences are negotiated, contested, and reimagined.

According to Rini Febriani, Chair of the Organizing Committee, the forum is expected to become a platform for exchanging ideas and research findings on cultural transformations occurring in today’s global society.

“Through this event, we aim to create a space for dialogue that brings together scholars and researchers from diverse backgrounds to discuss how literature represents, critiques, and transforms cultural changes in the era of globalization. We hope this dissemination forum will expand academic networks and foster productive research collaborations,” she stated.

The CFP welcomes submissions under several subthemes, including:

  • Cultural Industry and the Standardization of Literature
  • Literature as a Site of Power Negotiation
  • Myth-Making in Popular Literature
  • Contestation and Demystification of Narratives in Global Space
  • Reconfiguring Localities in Globality

These subthemes provide opportunities for scholars to explore literary studies and cultural phenomena relevant to the development of contemporary global society.

Dr. Aprinus Salam, M.Hum., Head of the Master’s Program in Literature, Faculty of Cultural Sciences, UGM, also expressed his support for the event. He emphasized that globalization not only facilitates interactions among cultures but also shapes the politics of literary production on a global scale.

“The themes emerging in contemporary literary works do not arise by chance. Behind their emergence lie global dynamics and power relations that influence the direction of literary production worldwide. Issues such as the environment, gender, and other contemporary concerns are often part of global currents that shape literary trends and orientations. Therefore, literature should be understood not only as an aesthetic work but also as an integral part of political economy and global cultural dynamics,” he explained.

Paper submission and registration will be open from 29 June to 4 September 2026. The peer-review process will take place from 5–26 September 2026, with acceptance notifications announced on 28 September 2026. Revised manuscripts must be submitted by 5 October 2026, while presentation materials are due on 26 October 2026. The International Dissemination Forum will be held on 4 November 2026.

Participants are invited to submit full papers in English through the official registration link provided by the organizing committee. Submitted manuscripts should be between 5,000 and 7,000 words and will undergo a selection and peer-review process before being accepted for presentation at the conference.

Through this International Dissemination event, the Master’s Program in Literature, Faculty of Cultural Sciences, Universitas Gadjah Mada, aims to strengthen national and international academic networks, encourage cross-institutional collaboration, and provide a productive platform for scholarly discussions on literature and culture amid the complexities of globalization.

FIB UGM Dean Emphasizes Strengthening Collaboration and Internationalization

HEADLINESNews Release Wednesday, 4 March 2026

Yogyakarta, March 3, 2026 – The Dean of the Faculty of Cultural Sciences (FIB) at Universitas Gadjah Mada, Prof. Dr. Setiadi, M.Si., emphasized the importance of strengthening interdisciplinary collaboration and expanding international engagement in the development of humanities scholarship. He delivered the message during the Open Senate Meeting marking the 80th Anniversary of FIB UGM on March 3, 2026, in Yogyakarta.

In his annual report, Prof. Setiadi described the faculty’s 80th anniversary as a moment to reflect on its long journey while looking ahead to future challenges and opportunities. With the theme “Eight Decades of Building Civilization,” the faculty aims to further strengthen its academic contributions at both national and international levels.

“For eighty years, the Faculty of Cultural Sciences at Universitas Gadjah Mada has undergone significant transformation and achieved notable accomplishments as a key pillar in the development of humanities scholarship,” he said.

He noted that the faculty’s achievements are the result of the collective efforts of its academic community, built upon the scholarly foundations laid by earlier generations.

One of the performance indicators highlighted in the report is the number of international students, which reached 150 students, exceeding the target of 100 students or 150 percent of the initial target. According to Prof. Setiadi, this reflects the growing international appeal of FIB UGM.

Research collaboration has also shown significant progress. The number of multidisciplinary research outputs reached 169 research titles, far surpassing the target of 84 projects, or about 201 percent of the target. This achievement indicates a stronger culture of collaborative research across academic disciplines.

In addition, FIB UGM recorded 2,378 news publications related to academic activities and community engagement in 2025, exceeding the target of 1,155 publications.

In terms of academic quality assurance, FIB UGM continues to strengthen the accreditation status of its study programs. Out of 21 study programs, 20 programs have received the highest accreditation status (Unggul) from BAN-PT, while the Master’s Program in American Studies has obtained the same status from LAMSPAK.

Several programs have also gained recognition from international accreditation bodies, including ACQUIN, AUN-QA, and FIBAA, further reinforcing the faculty’s position in global humanities education.

These academic achievements are also reflected in international rankings. The Anthropology, Archaeology, and English Literature programs are ranked first nationally in the QS World University Rankings by Subject, with global rankings in the 101–170 and 151–200 ranges. Meanwhile, EduRank placed FIB UGM’s literature field first in Indonesia among 68 institutions offering literary studies.

Prof. Setiadi also highlighted developments in student performance. Currently, FIB UGM has 4,346 active students, consisting of 3,448 undergraduate students, 672 master’s students, and 226 doctoral students. Academic data shows improvement in student performance, with the average undergraduate GPA increasing from 3.62 to 3.67, while the average study duration decreased from 4.42 years to 4.28 years.

He expressed appreciation for the contributions of lecturers, administrative staff, and students. Over the past four years, FIB students have achieved 23 international awards, 224 national awards, and 48 regional awards.

Concluding his remarks, Prof. Setiadi emphasized the importance of maintaining integrity, solidarity, and academic values within the faculty community.

“In the academic world, which upholds honesty, equality, and integrity, we must continue to nurture a culture of mutual learning, care, and mentorship while strengthening our solidarity as the FIB UGM community,” he said.

As it enters its eighth decade, FIB UGM aims to remain a productive space for the advancement of humanities scholarship and to contribute to the development of civilization through education, research, and community engagement. Such efforts reflect the broader commitment of higher education institutions to advance knowledge, expand global collaboration, and generate meaningful benefits for society.

Alumni Talk Entrepreneur Early Career Navigation: Aligning Your College Goals with Your Dreams

News ReleaseSDGs 17: Partnerships for the GoalsSDGs 4: Pendidikan BerkualitasSDGs 8: Decent work and economic growth Monday, 15 September 2025

The  English Literature Study Program held an inspiring alumni talk titled Early Career Navigation: Aligning Your College Goals with Your Dreams. This event featured Indra Pradipa Yudha, better known as Andrew Yudha, an alumnus as well as the CEO and founder of Discovery English and Speakhub.id. He is also an English teacher, edupreneur, and content creator. This seminar was a valuable opportunity for students to gain insight into how to make the most of their college years as a stepping stone to future career success.

During the session, Andrew Yudha shared his personal and professional journey. He emphasized that success is not determined by how fast or slow the learning process is, but by consistency and perseverance throughout the process. Andrew also encouraged students to start with a fundamental question: “Why?”.

The discussion developed into various reasons for choosing to study English Literature, ranging from the desire to continue studying, become a teacher, improve English skills, to opening up wider career opportunities, building networks, gaining international experience, and enjoying the field of study. Not only that, Andrew also introduced a practical framework for life and career planning. He explained the Wheel of Lyfe concept, which divides life into three important aspects: Relationships, Health, and Wealth. This holistic perspective encourages students to balance all aspects of their lives, not just focus on professional ambitions.

Another interesting concept is finding the sweet spot in business opportunities. According to Andrew, the sweet spot lies at the intersection of three things: topics of interest, fields that people need, and markets that are of sufficient size. Various examples of passion-based business ideas were also presented, ranging from English, productivity, investment, fashion, to self-development. The students’ enthusiasm was evident throughout the event. The interactive discussion was lively, with various questions asked to the speakers. Andrew also emphasized the importance of learning from mentors, both paid and free.

The English Literature Study Program hopes this seminar will serve as an important foundation for students to align their academic goals with their career aspirations, as well as provide a clearer roadmap for navigating their future.

UGM Students Preserves Javanese Script Through the “P4 Carakan” KKN-PPM Program

News ReleaseSDGs 10: Mengurangi KetimpanganSDGs 11: Sustainable cities and communitiesSDGs 17: Partnerships for the GoalsSDGs 4: Pendidikan Berkualitas Tuesday, 9 September 2025

Yogyakarta, September, 9, 2025 – Gadjah Mada University (UGM) is once again implementing the Community Empowerment Field Study Program (KKN-PPM), a student service program that is both an academic tradition and a form of social responsibility for universities towards the community. The 50-day program, running from June 20 to August 8, 2025, places students in various regions to interact with the community, identify needs, and provide creative, science-based solutions. Among the many programs initiated by students, one that stands out is P4 Carakan (Introduction, Learning, Training, and Application of Carakan), a concrete effort to preserve and promote Javanese script in Pacitan Regency, East Java.

This program was conceived by Dhiny Maulina Mahanani, a student of the Javanese Language, Literature, and Culture Study Program, and implemented at Madrasah Ibtidaiyah Negeri (MIN) 2 Pacitan, Bungur Village, Tulakan District, Pacitan Regency, East Java.

Dhiny explained that the background of this program stems from the low interest of students in learning local content, especially Javanese script, which is often considered complicated. Therefore, he developed a more interactive and enjoyable learning method. The activity began with the screening of an animated video about the history of Javanese script, followed by an introduction to the basics of Carakan, its rules of use, and an interactive quiz with prizes to encourage students to express their opinions. This resulted in increased enthusiasm among students, as evidenced by their active participation and various questions.

“The goal of this program is to dispel the notion that learning Javanese script is difficult, while also increasing young people’s interest in local knowledge. This is part of a real effort to preserve Javanese culture,” said Dhiny in an online interview on September 30, 2025.

Initially, the program was planned to be targeted only at third-grade students. However, thanks to the support of the school, the teaching target was expanded to include all students in grades 1-6, with a total of 109 participants. This situation presented its own challenges in implementing the program.

Despite facing challenges in managing a large number of students, Dhiny admitted that interactive methods helped her maintain the participants’ focus and enthusiasm. Support from the school was also key to the success of this program. “I am proud and happy to be able to share my knowledge and successfully attract students to learn about local knowledge. I am also touched because all the teachers and students have noticed a change in the students’ enthusiasm for learning,” she added.

The presence of the P4 Carakan program is an example of how community service activities can serve to empower the community while also promoting local culture that has begun to be marginalized. The P4 Carakan program is proof that efforts to preserve and revive culture can begin in small classrooms in rural areas. Through continuous cooperation, cultural preservation does not only remain at a symbolic level, but can also find its relevance in the midst of community life, namely as a form of national identity and the cultural wealth of the archipelago.
