The journey within the 1000 Digital Startup Movement began with enthusiasm and hope for a group of participants involved. This program offers an extraordinary opportunity for them to establish a startup intensively over six months. The program combines online and offline meetings in a hybrid format, allowing participants to connect and collaborate effectively. Their first meeting took place at the Hack4ID event, held at the TILC building, Vocational School, Universitas Gadjah Mada. There, the team members—Adri, Ahmad, Boby, Padma, and soon-to-join Alfin—met for the first time, forming a group that would later become their comrades-in-arms. This Hack4ID event spanned two days, from Saturday, March 2 to Sunday, March 3, 2024, and was filled with valuable learning experiences. Participants were taught to be more aware in identifying problems and proposing solutions based on solid data, not just assumptions.

In this meeting, they were also challenged to quickly decide on the type of startup they wanted to establish and the field they would focus on. After intense discussions, they agreed to create HaloCats, a startup in the pet care industry. Their goal was simple but significant—to make it easier for cat owners to sterilize their pets safely and comfortably. However, this meeting wasn’t just about work. It also marked the beginning of a friendship they built together, forming a strong foundation for facing the long and challenging journey of building this startup. HaloCats now stands as a tangible proof of the team’s collaboration and hard work, and they are ready to face the next challenges with full enthusiasm.

University campuses serve as ideal spaces to explore knowledge beyond the classroom. Discussion forums can be created as a response to pressing issues, such as inequality in Indonesia. These discussions can be sparked through various media, including music and film, which is exactly what the Anthropology Students Association (KEMANT) has done through its event, Rembukant #2, a program initiated by KEMANT’s academic division. This second edition of Rembukant invited participants to watch a film and explore the creative process behind the music currently trending in Papua Highlands.

The event took place on Thursday, September 26, 2024, in Room 521+522 of Soegondo Hall, Faculty of Cultural Sciences, UGM. With the theme “Celebrating Identity Through Music: Technology, Tradition, and Globalization in Wisisi Nit Meke,” KEMANT encouraged participants not just to watch but also to engage in a discussion with the filmmaker. The event featured Wok The Rock as the film’s producer, Asep Nayak as the musician and main actor, and Cania, a 2020 UGM Cultural Anthropology alumna and current film researcher. The event was moderated by Puspita Nindya Sari, a 2023 Cultural Anthropology student.

The event began with a film screening, followed by a discussion with the speakers, and concluded with a Q&A session and a flashmob of the Aster dance, led by Asep Nayak. Aster dance is a popular dance in Papua today, performed to the beat of wisisi music created by Asep Nayak.

The second speaker, Asep Nayak, shared his journey as a wisisi musician and film actor. He explained how his passion for music led him to learn FL Studio software on his own via YouTube. Through his storytelling, Asep highlighted the significance of wisisi music and its collaboration with Aster dance in the context of Papuan society.

The final speaker, Cania, provided an anthropological analysis of the film. She shared her perspective on how the film reflects the intersection of technology, tradition, globalization, and identity.

The discussion was engaging and interactive, with the film Wisisi Nit Meke offering new insights into how wisisi music and Aster dance have become part of the identity of the indigenous Papuan community. The internet, as a result of technological progress, has made global information more accessible, including tutorials for using FL Studio, which has become a tool for creative expression. Rembukant #2 concluded with a flashmob of the Aster dance, accompanied by wisisi music led by its creator.

Wednesday, May 8, 2024 – The Austrian Embassy in Indonesia and the Indonesian Ministry of Foreign Affairs collaborated with the Jakarta Concert Orchestra to celebrate the 70th anniversary of diplomatic relations between Indonesia and Austria. The “Symphony of Friendship” Orchestra Concert was held on Wednesday (8/5) at the Jakarta Concert Hall, iNews Tower Building. Several distinguished guests, such as the Austrian Ambassador to Indonesia, the Director General for American and European Affairs of the Indonesian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, as well as diplomats and senior officials from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs strategic partners, were invited to attend the concert.

The orchestra concert, conducted by Avip Priatna, was divided into two parts. In the first part, the Jakarta Concert Orchestra performed works by Anton Bruckner and Johann Strauss. Renowned Austrian violinist Julian Walder, the main guest star of the “Symphony of Friendship” Orchestra Concert, performed a solo of Korngold’s Violin Concerto in the second part.

The Department of Anthropology at Universitas Gadjah Mada invited Professor Emeritus Sabine Troeger from the University of Bonn to teach a research methodology course. She is both an experienced educator and practitioner with decades of experience in development studies and climate change. Among her achievements is involvement in the design and implementation of programs by the German International Cooperation Agency (GIZ) in various African and Asian countries. The course was held in 14 sessions during September 2024 and was attended by both undergraduate and graduate Anthropology students. The general lecture with Professor Sabine also served as a preparatory class for undergraduate students selected to participate in the 2024 Merdeka Campus Competition Program (PKKM).

In this course, students had the opportunity to deepen their understanding of applying participatory methods, widely used to engage communities in empowerment programs. Rather than just listening to lectures, students tried using several tools, such as Venn diagrams, spider diagrams, and well-being matrices, to understand how they can be applied in field data collection. In the second half of the course, students presented readings from scholars like Jurgen Habermas, Foucault, and Robert Chambers, which helped them apply theories to their own research.

Although the course was conducted in a block system with consecutive sessions, participants’ enthusiasm remained high from start to finish. This was due to the varied teaching methods and the active role students played in presenting their ideas. Professor Sabine Troeger expressed her delight in conducting the course and seeing the students’ enthusiasm. To close the course, she invited her students to dinner for an informal discussion about their research interests for the future. The hope is that through such activities, quality education as aligned with SDG 4, and partnerships for shared goals as aligned with SDG 17, can be achieved.

The peak agenda of the ‘Middle East Culture Week’ activity organized by the Middle East Cultural Studies Student Association of Gadjah Mada University (IMABTA UGM) has been carried out on Wednesday, September 16, 2024. The celebration was successfully merged with the agenda of the National Seminar Mangayubagya Dr. Hindun, M.Hum which was held offline in the Soegondo Room of the Faculty of Arts UGM at 08.00 – 12.30 WIB. Previously, IMABTA UGM and PPIDK Timtengka had signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) of organizational and academic-based cooperation on July 31, 2024 at the Omega Education Group Office, South Jakarta.

The points of cooperation between the two parties are as follows.

1. Publishing information about education, research, and service.
2. Open opportunities for collaborative research and scientific publications in the MECRI Journal.
3. Open opportunities for collaboration in volunteering and community service activities.
4. Collaborate in the implementation of the ‘Middle East Culture Week’ which is held once a year.
5. The collaboration is valid for 5 years.

As the closing of the big agenda of ‘Middle East Culture Week’, the symbolic MoU was marked by the showing of a short video with a duration of 2 minutes 23 seconds. In the video, a series of documentation from a series of activities that have been held by IMABTA UGM from May to July are shown. A little flashback first, the first series of ‘Middle East Culture Week’ began with the IMABTA Greeting event on May 30, 2024.

Continuing on June 7, 2024, the Middle East Issues Talk Seminar which was accompanied by Palestinian Literature Observer, Dr. Hindun, M.Hum was held online and attended by Indonesian students both at home and abroad. The third agenda ‘Sharing Session KBTT UGM Expo’ was resumed on June 13, 2024. Furthermore, the Book Review presenting Indra Gunawan, Lc., M.A. was held on June 27, 2024. As a closing agenda, IMABTA UGM and PPIDK Timtengka held their last activity, namely the ‘Scientific Essay Writing Competition’ which is ongoing until November 2024.
