Seminar and Workshop on the Role of PELBAKORI Instructors in Preparing South Korean CPMIs to Become National Ambassadors

HEADLINESNews ReleaseSDGs 11: Sustainable cities and communitiesSDGs 17: Partnerships for the GoalsSDGs 4: Quality EducationSDGs 8: Decent work and economic growth Monday, 24 February 2025

Yogyakarta, 23/2/2025 – University Club Boulevard hosted a seminar and workshop aimed at improving the role of PELBAKORI instructors in preparing prospective Indonesian migrant workers to work in South Korea. Welcomed by the dean of the Faculty of Humanities, Prof. Dr. Setiadi, S.Sos., M.Si., the event was a follow-up to an audience held in January 2025 between the Ministry of Protection of Indonesian Migrant Workers (KP2MI) and PELBAKORI, which focused on the government-to-government (G to G) labour dispatch programme.

One of the crucial issues identified in this programme is the language barrier faced by Indonesian migrant workers, which is a concern for Korean employers. Many workers have difficulty understanding work instructions, resulting in miscommunication and potential conflict. To address this, PELBAKORI is committed to improving the quality and skills of prospective migrant workers, especially in language acquisition, by collaborating with academic institutions.

Instructors from vocational training centres (LPK) that are members of PELBAKORI play an important role in this initiative. They are tasked with equipping migrant workers with the language skills necessary to succeed in South Korea. Therefore, it is imperative that these instructors continue to improve their teaching skills in Korean.

The Korean Language and Culture Study Programme at Universitas Gadjah Mada (UGM) has been a key partner of PELBAKORI since 2018. This collaboration aims to create synergy between academia, vocational training institutions, and KP2MI to improve the quality of prospective migrant workers. The ultimate goal is to prepare these workers to become ambassadors of the nation who contribute to the country’s foreign exchange earnings, in accordance with KP2MI’s tagline #BerangkatMigranPulangJuragan.

The seminar was attended by distinguished guests, including Dwi Setiawan Susanto, Director General of Promotion and Utilisation of Overseas Employment Opportunities at KP2MI, and Abri Danar Prabawa, Director of Vocational Institutional Development for Indonesian Migrant Workers at KP2MI. Also present will be the heads of UPT BP3MI from Yogyakarta, Central Java, and East Java, as well as Shin Jiwon from the Centre for Southeast Asian Studies at Hankuk University of Foreign Studies (HUFS).

The event will also feature expert speakers, including Suray Agung Nugroho, S.S., MA, Ph.D. from the department of Korean Language and Culture, Faculty of Cultural Sciences, Universitas Gadjah Mada, Didin Samsudin, S.E., M.M., CHCM., CIT. from Universitas Pendidikan Indonesia, and Dr Hwang Who Young, M.A. from Universitas Gadjah Mada. Their insights will be invaluable in discussing challenges and solutions related to language training for migrant workers.

As part of the workshop, participants will engage in interactive sessions designed to improve their teaching methodologies and language teaching techniques. This practical approach aims to empower instructors to better prepare their students for the realities of working in South Korea, ensuring they can communicate and integrate well in the workplace.

This seminar and workshop is a significant step towards achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), especially in terms of access to education and decent work for all. By investing in the education and training of migrant workers, Indonesia not only improves their competitiveness but also fosters a more skilled workforce that can contribute positively to the economy.

In conclusion, collaboration between PELBAKORI, KP2MI, and academic institutions is crucial to the success of Indonesian migrant workers in South Korea. By overcoming the language barrier and improving the quality of training, this initiative will help create a generation of skilled workers who can be ambassadors for Indonesia abroad.

FIB UGM Korean Language and Culture Students Won 1st Place in K-Newscasting Competition by KCCI

HEADLINESNews ReleaseSDGs 11: Sustainable cities and communitiesSDGs 4: Quality EducationStudent's Activity Thursday, 13 February 2025

Yogyakarta, 13/2/2025 – On 4 February 2025, two student representatives from the Korean Language and Culture study programme of Universitas Gadjah Mada (UGM) showed their skills in a competition that celebrates education and cultural exchange in the K-Newscasting Competition organised by the Korean Culture Center Indonesia (KCCI).

The event began with the opening and technical competition for this final round. After the opening remarks, the final round of the competition began. Participants were tasked with presenting a pre-made news segment in Korean, demonstrating their language skills and ability to convey information effectively.

The atmosphere was electric as each contestant performed, showcasing their unique style and perspective. After all participants had delivered their segments, the judges provided comments for each contestant. This judging session was very important for the students, as it provided insight into their performances and areas for improvement.

While waiting for the announcement of the winners, the audience was entertained with a lucky draw, which added an element of fun and engagement for the audience. The atmosphere was festive, with participants and spectators alike hoping for a chance to win exciting prizes.

Finally, the long-awaited moment arrived. The announcement of the winners was met with cheers and applause. To the pride of the UGM delegation, one of the two student representatives, Mulya Ghefira Azzahra, was declared the first winner of the K-Newscasting Competition. This outstanding achievement not only highlights the hard work and dedication of the students, but also confirms the quality of education provided by UGM.

Let’s take a look at the impressions of our two students about this competition:

“Do it scared” is a slogan that encourages me to keep going and dare to try new things. I believe that courage does not mean not feeling fear, but to keep going despite doubts or even lack of confidence. I am very happy to be able to participate in this race because I do like challenges. Through this valuable experience, I was able to meet many cool people and learn many new things from them. Although I didn’t win, I see this as the first step to opening up more opportunities and continuing to grow. Of course, there is a slight sense of disappointment, but I have no regrets because I have tried to give my best. Going forward, I will continue to try other opportunities and stay excited for the next challenge. Lastly, I would like to thank my prodi and family for their support because it means a lot!!! -Adzini

Initially, I was quite confident about participating in the final, but after seeing the other participants’ abilities, I didn’t really expect to win. Even so, I still tried to perform as much as possible by learning from the judges’ feedback from the first session. While performing, I mispronounced some words and felt that my gestures were not good enough, even so, I hoped that I could at least win the runner-up or third place. When second place was mentioned, I finally gave up and continued eating snacks. However, when my name was suddenly called as the first place winner, I was shocked, and came forward while still chewing my food. That will be a memorable moment for me. This experience is a good start for us to continue challenging ourselves in the next opportunity. I’m very grateful for the support from 교수님 and Prodi, not to forget my supportive family, I can get to this point thanks to them. -Mulya

This win can be an inspiration for other students in the programme, encouraging them to pursue their interest in language and culture with passion. The success of UGM students in the K-Newscasting Competition is a moment of pride for the university and a significant contribution in promoting Korean culture in Indonesia. It highlights the role of educational institutions in developing talent and encouraging cultural appreciation, ultimately contributing to a more interconnected world. Competitions such as this play a huge role in promoting education and cultural exchange, aligning with sustainable development goals.

Inauguration of Professor Prof. Dr Suhandono, M.A. Faculty of Cultural Sciences in Anthropological Linguistics

HEADLINESNews ReleaseSDGs 11: Sustainable cities and communitiesSDGs 4: Quality Education Tuesday, 11 February 2025

Yogyakarta, 11/2/2025 – Universitas Gadjah Mada’s Senate Hall was filled with enthusiasm and pride as the university celebrated the inauguration of Prof. Dr. Suhandono, M.A. as Professor in the Faculty of Humanities, specialising in Anthropological Linguistics. The event took place on Tuesday, 11 February 2025, and was attended by distinguished faculty members, students, as well as guests from various academic institutions.

In his speech, Prof Suhandono emphasised the importance of positive discourse analysis within the framework of ecolinguistics. He explained how language not only reflects speakers’ views on the environment, but also influences the way they think and act towards it. This link between language and environmental awareness is particularly important in the context of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly in education.

Prof. Suhandono points out that while language alone may not hold the key to solving environmental problems, it has a significant role in shaping people’s attitudes and behaviours. He argues that through education, individuals can be equipped with the linguistic tools necessary to engage in meaningful discussions about environmental conservation and sustainability.

One of the key examples he provides is the concept of ‘wit angker,’ or haunted trees, which serve as a cultural strategy for environmental conservation. This traditional practice highlights how local wisdom and language can contribute to sustainable practices, demonstrating the interplay between culture, language and environmental management.

The professor further explained how positive discourse can encourage a sense of environmental responsibility. By promoting narratives that celebrate nature and encourage sustainable practices, educators can inspire students to become active participants in environmental conservation efforts. This is in line with the SDGs’ focus on quality education and sustainable communities.

In closing, the celebration of Prof Suhandono’s achievements serves as a reminder of the vital role education plays in shaping a sustainable future. By harnessing the power of language, we can develop a deeper understanding of our environment and empower individuals to take action for a better world.

Celebration of the Demolition of Buildings A & B at the Faculty of Cultural Sciences, UGM

HEADLINESNews ReleaseSDGs 11: Sustainable cities and communities Thursday, 6 February 2025

Yogyakarta, 3/2/2025 – Faculty of Cultural Sciences (FIB) at Universitas Gadjah Mada (UGM) held a ceremonial event to mark the demolition of Buildings A and B. This event took place at the connecting bridge between the two buildings, symbolizing a significant step in the development planning of the faculty. The demolition is part of a larger initiative to replace the old structures with modern facilities that better serve the needs of students and faculty alike.

The demolition of Buildings A and B has been officially announced and is currently open for bidding on the national auction portal. Interested parties can find more information at [this link](https://portal.lelang.go.id/lot-lelang/detail/1032493/UGM-Paket-gedung-dan-bangunan-untuk-dibongkar-di-lingkungan-FIB-di-Kabupaten-Sleman.html). This project aligns with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly in the area of sustainable infrastructure and urban development.

The ceremonial event, known as “Selametan,” is deeply rooted in Javanese culture and philosophy. It serves as a way to express gratitude and seek blessings for the future. The centerpiece of the celebration was a traditional “tumpeng,” a cone-shaped rice dish that symbolizes aspirations reaching towards the heavens. The tumpeng represents the masculine aspect of life, while the surrounding dishes reflect the feminine, emphasizing the balance and complementarity of both forces.

During the event, the attendees shared a meal that included various traditional foods, such as “ingkung,” a whole chicken that symbolizes humility and submission. This dish was presented in a way that reflects the spirit of togetherness and respect for the process of change. The gathering was not just a farewell to the old buildings but also a celebration of new beginnings.

The five-colored tumpeng served during the ceremony represented the concept of “pajupat,” symbolizing the duality of human desires and the need for purification. This aspect of the celebration highlighted the importance of self-reflection and the journey towards personal and communal growth. The event was a reminder that development planning is not just about physical structures but also about nurturing the community’s spirit.

As part of the celebration, attendees enjoyed “jajan pasar,” traditional snacks that reflect the evolving tastes of society. This element of the event emphasized the importance of adapting to change while honoring cultural heritage. The presence of “pisang,” or bananas, symbolized unity, as one bunch represents the strength of togetherness in facing the future.

The peak of the tumpeng, shaped like an egg, symbolized the embryo of life, representing new beginnings and the potential for growth. This imagery resonated with the faculty’s vision for the future, where new ideas and innovations can flourish in a supportive environment. The event also included offerings of chili, representing the act of seeking blessings and guidance from higher powers.

Beverages served during the ceremony included natural sources from the earth, such as coconut water, coffee, and tea, symbolizing the connection between nature and human life. This aspect of the celebration reinforced the importance of sustainability and the need to respect and care for the environment as part of the development planning process.

In conclusion, the Selametan event for the demolition of Buildings A and B at FIB UGM was not just a ceremonial farewell but a meaningful reflection on the values of community, growth, and sustainability. As the faculty embarks on this new chapter, the spirit of togetherness and cultural heritage will continue to guide its development planning efforts.
