September 26, 2025 – The Korean Language and Culture Study Program at Universitas Gadjah Mada held the Korindo Foundation Scholarship Awarding Ceremony for the 2025/2026 academic year. The event was opened by the MC and the Talchum performance, followed by welcoming remarks from Suray Agung Nugroho, S.S., M.A., Ph.D., Vice Dean for Finance, Assets, and Human Resources of the Faculty of Cultural Sciences, and Setiyono, General Manager of the Korindo Foundation.

The ceremony continued with the announcement of the names of Korean Language and Culture students from the Faculty of Cultural Sciences who were selected as recipients of the Korindo Foundation Scholarship for the 2025/2026 academic year. The following students were awarded the scholarship:

The event concluded with a group photo session featuring all scholarship recipients, representatives from the Korindo Foundation, the Faculty of Cultural Sciences’ leadership, and the Talchum performers. Through this event, the Korean Language and Culture Study Program hopes to continue strengthening its partnership with the Korindo Foundation in the years ahead.

The  English Literature Study Program held an inspiring alumni talk titled Early Career Navigation: Aligning Your College Goals with Your Dreams. This event featured Indra Pradipa Yudha, better known as Andrew Yudha, an alumnus as well as the CEO and founder of Discovery English and Speakhub.id. He is also an English teacher, edupreneur, and content creator. This seminar was a valuable opportunity for students to gain insight into how to make the most of their college years as a stepping stone to future career success.

During the session, Andrew Yudha shared his personal and professional journey. He emphasized that success is not determined by how fast or slow the learning process is, but by consistency and perseverance throughout the process. Andrew also encouraged students to start with a fundamental question: “Why?”.

The discussion developed into various reasons for choosing to study English Literature, ranging from the desire to continue studying, become a teacher, improve English skills, to opening up wider career opportunities, building networks, gaining international experience, and enjoying the field of study. Not only that, Andrew also introduced a practical framework for life and career planning. He explained the Wheel of Lyfe concept, which divides life into three important aspects: Relationships, Health, and Wealth. This holistic perspective encourages students to balance all aspects of their lives, not just focus on professional ambitions.

Another interesting concept is finding the sweet spot in business opportunities. According to Andrew, the sweet spot lies at the intersection of three things: topics of interest, fields that people need, and markets that are of sufficient size. Various examples of passion-based business ideas were also presented, ranging from English, productivity, investment, fashion, to self-development. The students’ enthusiasm was evident throughout the event. The interactive discussion was lively, with various questions asked to the speakers. Andrew also emphasized the importance of learning from mentors, both paid and free.

The English Literature Study Program hopes this seminar will serve as an important foundation for students to align their academic goals with their career aspirations, as well as provide a clearer roadmap for navigating their future.

The English Literature Study Program at Universitas Gadjah Mada (UGM)’s Faculty of Cultural Sciences recently hosted a seminar on academic ethics and the integrity of scientific work. Held as part of a series of welcoming activities for new students, the event’s goal was to equip them with the essential knowledge needed for responsible academic writing.

The seminar featured speakers Mia Riane Bird and Ella Eardahl, fellows from Oberlin Shansi, an organization dedicated to fostering cross-cultural understanding between Asia and the United States. Their participation offered valuable, real-world insights for the students.

Mia and Ella addressed crucial topics in the academic landscape, including the definition and various forms of plagiarism, practical strategies for avoiding it, and the ethical use of artificial intelligence (AI) in writing. They provided students with actionable tips and tricks for processing information correctly, such as paraphrasing, summarizing, and using quotations.

A key takeaway was the emphasis on using AI as an ethical tool, not a replacement for original thought and critical thinking. The speakers underscored that while technology can assist in the writing process, it should not compromise a student’s originality.

By holding this seminar, the English Literature Study Program aims to ensure its new students begin their academic journey with a strong foundation in ethical practices, a commitment to originality, and the skills to responsibly utilize modern technology.

Yogyakarta, August 6, 2025 – As a tangible form of community service, the Master’s Program in American Studies at Universitas Gadjah Mada (UGM) collaborated with BP3MI (Indonesian Migrant Worker Protection Agency), Yayasan Taman Cipta Karya Nusantara (TCKN), and Medical Outreachers Hong Kong to organize free health check-ups for returned Indonesian migrant workers. The event took place on Wednesday, August 6, 2025, at the TCKN Foundation in Yogyakarta.

This activity is part of an annual collaboration that has been running since 2023 between TCKN and Medical Outreachers, a charitable organization of medical students from the Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK) and the University of Hong Kong (HKU). This year, the American Studies Student and Alumni Association (ASSAA) of UGM’s Master’s Program in American Studies served as the main academic partner as well as the primary organizer of the event. ASSAA members and several volunteer master’s and doctoral students in American Studies also acted as interpreters, bridging communication between the medical students and the returned migrant workers in attendance.

Carrying the spirit of collaboration and public service, this program aimed to provide basic health screenings to raise health awareness, particularly regarding degenerative diseases that are common among older adults. In addition, the event also included a public education session and training on first aid skills in emergency situations, equipping participants with practical knowledge and abilities to respond effectively and promptly before professional medical help arrives.

The event began with welcoming remarks by Dr. Aris Munandar, M. Hum., Head of the Master’s Program in American Studies. This was followed by the public education and training session, and concluded with basic health screenings conducted by the medical students from Medical Outreachers Hong Kong, assisted by American Studies students serving as interpreters. The medical services provided included blood pressure checks, blood glucose level tests, body mass index (BMI) measurement, basic nutrition consultation, and general medical consultation. All services were offered free of charge to around 20 participants, who were returned migrant workers from Yogyakarta and surrounding areas.

Basic Health Screening Process

The involvement of UGM postgraduate students as interpreters and organizing committee members was expected to be a meaningful learning experience, enhancing their social awareness and intercultural communication skills. With the program’s objectives achieved and strong participant enthusiasm, the event is also expected to serve as a momentum to strengthen cross-border and cross-sector collaboration in creating tangible social impact.

Sunday, August 17, 2025 – 4 Students from the Faculty of Cultural Sciences, Ataya Sasya Heradie (Korean Language and Culture 2024), Tabita Nada Kirana (Cultural Anthropology 2024), Andieni Ika Bela Safitri (Indonesian Language and Literature 2024), and Thiery Vincent Masarrang (French Literature 2024), delivered a captivating performance at the Yogyakarta Presidential Palace alongside fellow members of UGM’s Marching Band. This special moment coincided with the commemoration of Indonesia’s 80th Independence Day. UGM Marching Band performed as the Display team in the Parade Senja at the Presidential Palace in Yogyakarta. The event was attended by Sri Sultan Hamengku Buwana X and key policymakers in Yogyakarta.

Ataya Sasya and her peers expressed their deep honor at being able to perform at the Yogyakarta Presidential Palace. After several years of absence, UGM Marching Band finally returned to the Palace in 2025, marking a moment welcomed with pride and joy.

This performance was not only part of the 80th Independence Day celebration, but also a reflection of students’ contribution to preserving art, culture, and national spirit. It is in line with Universitas Gadjah Mada’s commitment to the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly SDG 4: Quality Education, by providing opportunities for students to develop their talents through the arts, and SDG 11: Sustainable Cities and Communities, by promoting cultural preservation in public spaces.

With a spirit of togetherness and creativity, UGM Marching Band reaffirmed its role as a cultural ambassador of the university, inspiring the community while strengthening unity during this historic Independence Day celebration.
