Lecturer of Javanese Language, Literature, and Culture Study Program Introduces Philology in Public Lecture: Philology in Javanese Manuscript Studies

On Monday, March 4, 2024, at 09.30 WITA, Dr. Arsanti Wulandari, S.S., M.Hum, a lecturer from the Javanese Language, Literature and Culture Study Program, became a speaker in a public lecture entitled ‘Philology in Javanese Manuscript Studies’. This activity was organized through the Zoom platform by the Old Javanese Literature Study Program, Faculty of Cultural Sciences, Udayana University (FIB UNUD).

In the public lecture, Dr. Arsanti Wulandari presented an introduction to philology, reviewed the concept of philology, the object of study, the tasks of philologists, and the final product produced. The presentation was equipped with examples of Javanese manuscripts and their identification, so that the audience could understand about philology more easily. The discussion session that followed provided space for participants to ask various questions, showing their high enthusiasm for the topics discussed.

This public lecture on philology was held in response to the diminishing interest of students in the field of philological studies. However, the government is currently seriously encouraging the excavation of knowledge and values contained in ancient manuscripts. Hopefully, through this kind of activity, interest and understanding of philology can grow again among students.

The importance of understanding and maintaining the sustainability of knowledge and cultural values contained in ancient manuscripts is the focus of this public lecture. By providing knowledge, enthusiasm, and establishing good cooperation, it is hoped that the knowledge and cultural values in ancient manuscripts can be preserved and can then be developed according to the needs of the times.

Yogyakarta, Friday, February 23, 2024 – The Korean Language and Culture Study Program, Faculty of Cultural Sciences UGM, has held a public lecture for the Comprehensive Korean 2 course. The Comprehensive Korean 2 course includes learning about Korean language that often appears in the business world. This course itself is a course held as a result of cooperation between the Korean Language and Culture Study Program and the Korea Foundation with lecturers directly from South Korea.

The Comprehensive Korean 2 public lecture is held online through the Zoom platform at 13.30 WIB. This public lecture is open to all students of Korean Language and Culture UGM, and is mandatory for students who take Comprehensive Korean 2.

This public lecture invited alumni of the UGM Korean Language and Culture Study Program, namely Jodie Anisya Kusumasari as a guest speaker. Jodie is an alumnus of Korean Language and Culture UGM class of 2017 who now works at the Korea International Trade Association (KITA) Jakarta Center. In the public lecture, Jodie shared her experiences during college until she started her career. After the presentation of the material, the public lecture continued with a question and answer session between the participants and the speakers. Then, the public lecture was closed with a closing session and documentation by the moderator.

This Comprehensive Korean Public Lecture 2 aims to introduce the world of work to students. That way, this public lecture is expected to be a means of self-development for students. In addition, this public lecture is a medium between the study program and alumni to continue to establish cooperation with alumni. This is in line with the sustainable development goals, namely Quality Education and Partnerships to Achieve Goals.

Home Away from Home: The Journey of Rina Kurana Awom, a Student from Papua Finding Comfort at UGM Yogyakarta

Rina Kurana Awom is a lecturer in the Department of Anthropology, Faculty of Literature and Culture at the University of Papua, Manokwari. Coming from the Biak tribe in West Papua, Rina is currently pursuing her PhD in Humanities (Study of Oral Traditions) at the Faculty of Cultural Sciences, Universitas Gadjah Mada. Her story reflects an academic journey filled with challenges and courage.

Rina’s decision to continue her studies at UGM is not her first time. After completing her undergraduate degree at Cenderawasih University in 2005, she immediately pursued her master’s degree at UGM, encouraged by her mother. Although initially intending to gain work experience, Rina received a scholarship from the Center for Education and Training for Women of the Evangelical Christian Church in Papua Land (P3W GKI), which further strengthened her academic journey to pursue her master’s degree. After successfully completing her master’s degree in 2008, Rina felt confident to return to UGM for her PhD due to its academic reputation and the comfort she felt in Yogyakarta. Additionally, the support of professional lecturers in her field of interest and the availability of the Humanities PhD program at FIB UGM were her main reasons.

After living in Yogyakarta, Rina feels very comfortable and safe. She has felt this comfort since her master’s studies in 2005. Although Yogyakarta is becoming more crowded, the friendliness of the locals and affordable living costs make her feel at home. Rina is glad to be able to worship peacefully in churches that are accessible. However, she experienced culture shock, especially in understanding directions and finding accommodation, as local people generally use terms like west, east, north, and south to show directions.

During her time at UGM, Rina focused more on academic activities. However, FIB UGM provided her with opportunities to participate in activities such as Focus Group Discussions (FGD) and local research with the Center for Policy Studies and Population (PSKK) UGM, enriching her academic experience.

Rina recommends FIB UGM as a study option for her friends in Papua. She sees many positive changes and developments at UGM, especially with the “Kampus Rakyat” slogan. The supportive campus environment, continuously evolving facilities, and competent lecturers make UGM an ideal place to pursue education. The affordable cost of living and the friendliness of the entire campus community add to the positive experience of studying at UGM.

With all the experiences and support she has received, Rina feels that Yogyakarta has become a “home away from home” for her, providing comfort and opportunities for growth amidst the challenges of living far from her hometown.

In-Person Lecture on Introduction to Korean History

Unlike usual, the Introduction to Korean History lecture on Friday, May 17, 2024, was held in-person. The course instructor, Dr. Rostineu, S.S., M.A., is a lecturer in the Korean Language and Culture Program at the University of Indonesia. This time, Dr. Rostineu came directly to the Korean Language and Culture Program at Universitas Gadjah Madaa to conduct the lecture in-person.

The in-person lecture was held in Room 707 of the Soegondo Building at the Faculty of Cultural Sciences (FIB) UGM, from 9:00 to 11:00 AM WIB. The lecture was attended by approximately one hundred students enrolled in the course. The lecture proceeded in a conducive and interactive manner.

This course focuses on the history of Korea from prehistoric times to the modern era. The material presented was very appropriate, given that the instructor is an expert in the field and has even published a book on Korean history. Therefore, this class was organized to enhance the knowledge of students in the Korean Language and Culture Program regarding Korean history.

At the end of the lecture, students presented flowers to Dr. Rostineu, S.S., M.A. as a memento. The lecture concluded with a group photo featuring Dr. Rostineu, Mr. Suray Agung Nugroho, S.S., M.A., Ph.D., and all the course participants.

Korea Foundation Offline Class: Korean Business

On May 17, 2024, the Korean Language and Culture Study Program at FIB UGM held another offline class in collaboration with the Korea Foundation. Every semester, they routinely organize classes in cooperation with the Korea Foundation. This semester’s offline lecture was the Korean Business course.

Halfway through the semester, Prof. Kim Su-Eun, the course instructor from Hankuk University of Foreign Studies, came directly to the Korean Language and Culture Study Program at UGM to conduct the class in person. The lecture lasted for two hours from 1:00 PM to 3:00 PM WIB in room 114 of the Soegondo Building, FIB UGM.

This course focuses on the Korean language commonly used in the Korean business world. The material delivered was highly relevant because the instructor is a native Korean speaker. Therefore, this class was organized to enhance the Korean language skills of students in the Korean Language and Culture program, which will be beneficial for their future careers.

A total of 30 students were enrolled in the course. The lecture proceeded smoothly and constructively. As a memento, the program presented flowers to Prof. Kim Su-Eun at the end of the lecture. After the flower presentation, the session continued with a group photo with Prof. Kim Su-Eun, Mrs. Alfiana Amrin Rosyadi, S.S., M.A., the class coordinator, and all the course participants.
