Anthropology Students Observe Village Dynamics

As part of their end-of-semester assignment, Cultural Anthropology students taking the Rural Anthropology course went directly to the field, conducting research to deepen their understanding of the dynamics that occur in rural communities. In particular, the major theme researched by the students was the inequality that occurs in the village. This research was conducted in peri-urban areas around the Special Region of Yogyakarta, with the existence of a ringroad as a barrier to the definition of which area is a village area and which area is an urban area.

Throughout the lecture period, the material presented by Dr. Agung Wicaksono, M.A. as the lecturer of the course discussed a lot about the development of rural dynamics in Java – starting from the colonial era, the new order, reformation, to the present. Since the center of Indonesia’s government has always been in Java, the government’s control over villages in Java has also become a broader reflection of the government within the country. One of the impacts of government policies in rural Java is the emergence of various inequalities. Village officials had more land ownership rights than ordinary people. People who own land then have more capital to reap profits, especially when the New Order government began implementing the Green Revolution program. The landowners who benefited from the increase in capital during the green revolution were people who were influential in the village political sphere. One of the goals of the new order regime in implementing the green revolution program was to pacify the villagers, so that they would not create anti-government movements.

The traces of this inequality can still be seen in rural areas today. With the increase in the number of the newly rich (OKB) following the rise in market prices of some agricultural products in the early 2000s, wealth inequality has become increasingly visible in rural areas. For this reason, the end-of-semester assignment for this Rural Anthropology class was to go directly to the villages, to see the real situation unfolding there. The 76 students who took this class were divided into groups, each with 4-5 members. The villages visited included Hargowilis, Kokap District, Kulon Progo Regency; Gadingsari, Sanden District, Bantul Regency; and Sumber, Dukun District, Magelang Regency.

The group that went to Sumber Village, Magelang, consisted of four Cultural Anthropology students from batch 2023 – Agustina Herawati, Muhammad Syukur, Aisha Nur Fadillah, and Amadeus Abhirama. In a two-day research (November 26-27, 2024), the Sumber group tried to see how inequality arises, especially those related to gender. Sumber is a village on the slopes of Mount Merapi, with the majority of the population working as farmers. There is also a sand mining industry that has developed in recent years. From here, the Sumber group tried to see how the distribution of work and the division of tasks between the people in the village were compartmentalized between women and men. The research was conducted through in-depth interviews with residents and direct observation of the conditions around the village.

Yogyakarta, November 14, 2024 – Faculty of Cultural Sciences (FIB) Universitas Gadjah Mada (UGM) enthusiastically welcomed the working visit of Department of Indonesian Literature, Faculty of Arts, Universitas Hasanuddin (Unhas) on November 12-13, 2024. This visit is part of the efforts to implement the cooperation between the two faculties, which covers the fields of education, research, and community service.

This activity is an important momentum for FIB UGM to strengthen synergies and explore new collaboration opportunities with Unhas. The main discussion focused on the development of the BIPA (Indonesian Language for Foreign Speakers) curriculum and the formulation of joint program implementation strategies that are expected to improve the quality of teaching and student learning experiences.

The team from Unhas who attended this working visit was led by Dr. Munira Hasjim, S.S., M.Hum, Head of the Indonesian Literature Department, accompanied by Prof. Dr. Nurhayati, M.Hum, and Dr. Inriati Lewa, M.Hum. Their presence was warmly welcomed by the lecturers and academic staff of FIB UGM, as well as representatives of the Indonesian Language and Literature Study Program.

The Dean of the Faculty said that this visit was a form of the Faculty’s commitment to continue to open itself to innovative and mutually beneficial cooperation. “We really appreciate the arrival of the team from Unhas. This is a real step to implement programs that can support the achievement of the main performance indicators of the faculty, as well as strengthen collaboration between faculties,” he said.

In addition to discussions on BIPA, this visit was also a forum to exchange views related to challenges and opportunities in the development of education and research in the field of language and literature. With this meeting, FIB UGM is optimistic that it can build a more solid collaboration with FIB Unhas, which in turn will enrich academic experience and expand networks in the field of Indonesian language and literature studies.

The UGM student team that is a member of the Tourism Student Association (HIMAPA) FIB UGM has completed Abdidaya (Community Service and Empowerment Event for Student Organizations) 2024 as a representative of UGM in early November. This activity was held on Thursday-Sunday, November 7-10, 2024 at Udayana University, Denpasar, Bali.

Abdidaya Ormawa is the culmination of the implementation of the PPK Ormawa 2024 program for 5 months of program implementation from June to October. This activity was realized as an award event for the PPK Ormawa teams that have completed their respective programs.

Please note, PPK Ormawa was attended by 2,289 teams from 359 universities and only 622 teams received funding and were entitled to carry out the program. Only then of the 622 teams that passed the funding, only 160 teams from 66 universities were entitled to participate in Abdidaya Ormawa and struggled to get award categories starting from the Implementation Team, Ormawa, Partners, Accompanying Lecturers and Universities.

The PPK Ormawa HIMAPA team that carries the program with the title, “SEAN (Sembrani-Agrotourism and Education): Development of Sembrani Watusigar Tourism Village based on Community Based Tourism (CBT)” managed to get two awards at the event.

The PPK Ormawa HIMAPA UGM team managed to achieve several achievements in the awarding night, among others:

– Best Assistance Lecturer 2 Category of Assistance Lecturer with Understanding of Community Empowerment

Consisting of 13 students from the Tourism Study Program and two from the Faculty of Agriculture, this team is diversified and well-prepared to support the implementation of the SEAN program. In addition, the team accompanied by Mohamad Rachmadian Narotama, S.T., M.Sc., Ph.D. as an assistant lecturer also received full support from various parties ranging from the Watusigar Village Government, Gadjah Mada University, Partners, Alumni and various other parties.

Vision of the Tourism Student Association (HIMAPA)
“Making the Tourism Student Association (HIMAPA) as a form of organization that can become a “forum” for UGM Tourism S-1 students to work together in realizing innovations based on integrity.”

Motivated by a strong vision of the Student Organization (Ormawa), making the Tourism Student Association (HIMAPA) has a strong determination and background in the implementation of PPK Ormawa. This aims as an effort to increase the capacity of student organizations through various coaching processes that are implemented in the form of community service and empowerment. The topic of the Tourism Village taken is considered to be in line with the vision and mission of the ormawa and various other assessment components have led Himapa ormawa to get the Best 1 award in the Tervisionary Ormawa category.

The dedication of the accompanying lecturer, Mr. Mohamad Rachmadian Narotama S.T, M.Sc, Ph.d in providing support and guidance to the Himapa team also paid off by being awarded in the Best 2 Lecturer category with the Best Understanding of Community Empowerment.

Yogyakarta, November 6, 2024 – Faculty of Cultural Sciences Universitas Gadjah Mada (UGM) received a visit from Majapahit Technology Islamic Boarding School and SMAK Penabur Harapan Indah on Wednesday morning. The event held at the Auditorium on the 7th floor of Soegondo Building was attended by around 190 students, consisting of 100 students from Majapahit Technology Islamic Boarding School and 90 students from SMAK Penabur Harapan Indah, along with accompanying teachers.

The visit was warmly welcomed by representatives of undergraduate and postgraduate students as well as staff of Public Relations and Cooperation of FIB UGM. In their remarks, teacher representatives from both schools expressed the purpose of their visit, which was to introduce students to the UGM campus environment and explore information about educational opportunities at the Faculty of Arts.

The question and answer session was interactive, with student representatives from Majapahit Technology Islamic Boarding School asking what technology is used in studying culture and the existence of a double degree program at FIB. Meanwhile, student representatives from SMAK Penabur Harapan Indah focused more on asking about the job prospects of graduates and how FIB graduates can compete with other faculties in the world of work.

The event ended with the handover of souvenirs from both schools to FIB UGM, followed by a group photo session. This moment was closed with a casual conversation between students and students, creating an atmosphere of intimacy before the group left the room. This visit is expected to motivate students to continue their higher education at UGM, especially at the Faculty of Cultural Sciences.

Yogyakarta, November 6, 2024 – Faculty of Cultural Sciences (FIB) Universitas Gadjah Mada (UGM) received a visit from 280 students and accompanying teachers from SMAN 2 Cikarang Pusat. The event took place in the Auditorium on the 7th floor of Soegondo Building, and was warmly welcomed by representatives of undergraduate and postgraduate students as well as staff of Public Relations and Cooperation of FIB UGM.

In his speech, one of the teacher representatives expressed her gratitude for the friendly and enthusiastic welcome. “This visit is very impressive. We feel welcomed with a warm and pleasant atmosphere,” she said.

The question and answer session was interactive, discussing various aspects of the entry process to UGM. The students asked about various things, such as preparation for entrance tests, special portfolios, and the effect of school accreditation or alumni on graduation. The representative of the Faculty of Arts UGM explained that no special portfolio is needed, school accreditation does not affect the chances, and influential alumni are not a determining factor for graduation.

In addition, the discussion also covered the professions and careers of graduates, alumni who have successfully pursued careers in various fields, and how the faculty shapes students to face future professional challenges.

The event was closed with the handover of souvenirs, group photos, and casual conversations between students and faculty members that strengthened the atmosphere of intimacy. This activity is expected to motivate students to continue their studies to a higher level, especially at the Faculty of Humanities UGM.
