UGM Professor of the Middle Eastern Cultural Studies Master’s Program Raises the Issue of Artificial Intelligence Challenges for Students in the Modern Era

HEADLINESNews ReleaseSDGs 17: Partnerships for the GoalsSDGs 4: Quality Education Monday, 22 July 2024

On Monday, July 15, 2024, Professor Dr. Sangidu, M.Hum., a Professor of Middle Eastern Cultural Studies at Universitas Gadjah Mada, was invited as a speaker at the Graduation and Scientific Oration event for prospective graduates of the Faculty of Ushuluddin Adab and Dakwah at Sayyid Ali Rahmatullah State Islamic University, Tulungagung, for the even semester of the 2023/2024 academic year. This event carried the theme ‘Graduates of Ushuluddin Adab and Dakwah and the Challenges of the Intelligence World’ and was also attended by Professor Dr. Masdar Hilmy, S.Ag. M.A., Ph.D., a Professor at Sunan Ampel State Islamic University, Surabaya, the Rector of Sayyid Ali Rahmatullah State Islamic University, Prof. Dr. H. Abd. Aziz, M.Pd.I., the Dean of the Faculty of Ushuluddin Adab and Dakwah, Prof. Dr. H. Akhmad Rizqon Khamami, Lc., M.A., vice deans, lecturers, and prospective graduates of the July 2024 period.

In his presentation, Prof. Dr. Sangidu, M. Hum., explained that Artificial Intelligence (AI) is an intelligence system that allows a set of computers or other machines to think and work like humans. The era of artificial intelligence (AI) brings significant changes in various sectors, including the education sector. Therefore, both lecturers and students need to understand and adapt to these developments to maximize the benefits of AI in the teaching and learning process.

In response to the presence of Artificial Intelligence (AI) technology, some members of the community are anxious and worried, even outright rejecting its presence. Nevertheless, it must be realized that the emergence and presence of AI cannot be blocked, rejected, or hindered, as this development is a testament to the progress of humanity in the world. Therefore, graduates of Ushuluddin Adab and Dakwah are expected not to be defensive but to seize the opportunity, adapt to the development and advancement of AI while adhering to ethics and morals based on agreed norms and conventions. The challenges faced by graduates of Ushuluddin Adab and Dakwah are not only the rapid presence of AI but also other challenges, such as deviant ideologies, secularism, and the demographic bonus of 2030. Despite this, Prof. Dr. Sangidu, M.Hum., urged the prospective graduates to not be afraid and to continue adapting and innovating to realize the nation’s aspiration of becoming a Golden Indonesia by 2045.

The Middle Eastern Cultural Studies Program at UGM Held a Book Discussion with a BIPA Practitioner from Al-Azhar University Cairo

News ReleaseSDGs 17: Partnerships for the GoalsSDGs 4: Quality Education Tuesday, 9 July 2024

The Master’s Program in Middle Eastern Cultural Studies, through the Association of Middle Eastern Cultural Studies Students (IMABTA UGM), organized a “Book Discussion” event on Thursday, June 27, 2024, in a hybrid format. This event featured BIPA Practitioner and Doctoral Candidate from Al-Azhar University Cairo, Indra Gunawan, Lc. M.A. Mr. Indra completed his bachelor’s and master’s degrees in the Tarikh wal Hadarah (History and Civilization) program and specializes in Islamic history for his dissertation research. The book discussed was “Risālatun Fī at-Ṭarīqi Ilā Ṡaqāfatinā” by Abu Fihr Mahmud Muhammad Shakir. This book was published in 1987 by the Egyptian General Book Organization.

The book “Risālatun Fī at-Ṭarīqi Ilā Ṡaqāfatinā,” translated as “Notes on the Way to Our Culture,” discusses the formation of culture and scholarly traditions in the Middle East. According to Mr. Indra, the formation of culture and scholarly traditions in the Middle East is continuous with the development of Islam because the Middle East flourished during the Islamic empires, particularly the Ottoman Empire. During that time, Middle Eastern culture was very famous and became a global trend. The scholarly tradition of that era became a reference point for the development of knowledge in Europe. Additionally, this book is based on literature from both Arab and European sources, so readers of this book are advised to have a good command of either Arabic or English.

Participants included students from Indonesian universities and several universities in the Middle East, namely Egypt and South Africa. They were very enthusiastic about the event, as evidenced by the many questions asked during the Q&A session.

Inviting a Guest Lecturer from Egypt: UGM’s Master’s Program in Middle Eastern Cultural Studies Discusses the Concept of Identity and Cultural Politics

SDG 4 (Quality Education)SDGs 17: Partnerships for the Goals Tuesday, 4 June 2024

The Master’s Program in Middle Eastern Cultural Studies in collaboration with the Master’s Program in American Studies at UGM is organizing a public lecture with the theme “Globalization amongst Middle Eastern and American Cultural Identity” on Friday, May 17, 2024. The KBTT UGM program is featuring a guest lecturer from Egypt, Prof. Dr. Sherif Saad Mohammed Elgayyar, who is currently a professor at Bani Suef University. The lecture will be attended by Prof. Dr. Sangidu, M.Hum., a Distinguished Professor of Arabic Literature, along with students from both study programs.

Prof. Elgayyar explained that the concept of identity and cultural politics is closely related to the idea of ‘home.’ Home influences an individual’s identity, such as gender, race, or ethnicity, which in turn affects how they interact with and interpret their home. The relationship between individual identity and home shapes physical spaces, including urban planning and area revitalization. This, of course, also results in the construction of social images of “difference” that form a community and the character of the society in that environment.
