Yogyakarta, 18/9/2025 — The Korean Language and Culture Study Program, Faculty of Cultural Sciences at Universitas Gadjah Mada, held a guest lecture for the course Comprehensive Korean I under the theme “흥미로운 세상: EPS TOPIK and Korean Language for Migrant Workers.” The event took place at the Soegondo Building Auditorium and featured program alumnus Adam Ferdian Bagastama, S.Hum., as the main speaker.

In his presentation, Adam shared firsthand experiences about the career prospects for graduates of the Korean Language and Culture Study Program. He previously worked as a translator at a textile factory producing footwear before becoming an instructor at LPK Hankuk Sippo in Tulungagung, East Java. Each year, the institution trains more than 200 participants preparing to join the official Indonesia–Korea government-to-government (G to G) employment program.

Adam also explained that one of the main requirements for joining the program is passing the EPS TOPIK (Employment Permit System – Test of Proficiency in Korean), a language proficiency test focused on practical and job-specific vocabulary relevant to fields such as manufacturing, fisheries, shipbuilding, and services.

To provide a real experience, students were invited to take part in a quiz consisting of EPS TOPIK-style questions. Aura, one of the participants, admitted that the questions were quite challenging. “The quiz was difficult because the vocabulary was very specific and different from what we usually learn in class,” she said.

Through this guest lecture, students are expected not only to understand the importance of mastering Korean academically but also to gain a clearer picture of concrete career opportunities after graduation, both within Indonesia and through official employment programs in South Korea.

Yogyakarta, 6/9/2025 — The Korean Language and Culture Study Program, Faculty of Cultural Sciences, Universitas Gadjah Mada, successfully held the UGM Korean Literature Festival 2025 at the Purbacaraka Auditorium. The event took place from 09.00 to 11.30 WIB and featured a series of activities including a literature seminar, award announcement, and a talk show with Cursed Bunny author, Chung Bora.

The seminar opened with a presentation by Mrs. Alfiana Amrin Rosyadi, one of the founders of the K-Lit UGM community. She shared the journey of K-Lit UGM from its early formation to its successful organization of various literary activities, including translation workshops and the first Korean literature festival in Indonesia.

Following this, Mrs. Febriani Elfida Trihtarani delivered a talk titled “Cursed Bunny: Between Horror, Magical Elements, and Social Issues.” She discussed how Chung Bora’s short story collection explores compelling narratives infused with horror, magical elements, and reflections of social issues in South Korea.

The event continued with the announcement of competition winners. In the Korean Literature Scientific Paper Competition, Az-Zahra Ahsana Amala won first place and received a prize of Rp3,000,000. Zahra also had the opportunity to present her paper titled “Analysis of Borderline Personality Disorder Tendencies in the Main Character of Lee Kkonnnim’s Novel Jugigo Sipeun Ai.” Second place went to Ajeng Adinda Putri (Rp1,500,000), and third place to Rizqi Hauna Nadhira (Rp1,000,000).

Meanwhile, in the Cursed Bunny Novel Video Review Competition, Bernadeta Dheswita Puspitasari won first place (Rp600,000), followed by Yosie Rizkha Amaf in second place (Rp450,000), and Jeanetta Gabriella Bangun in third place (Rp200,000).

All prizes were sponsored by the Korean Language and Culture Study Program, Faculty of Cultural Sciences UGM, as a form of appreciation for student creativity. The organizers hope that this festival will not only serve as a platform for literary engagement but also inspire young generations to be critical, creative, and attentive to the development of Korean literature in Indonesia.

On July 21–24, 2025, Iva Hanani, S.S., M.A., a lecturer in the Korean Language and Culture Program at the Faculty of Cultural Sciences, UGM, and also a teacher at the King Sejong Institute (KSI) in Yogyakarta, had the opportunity to attend the “2025 King Sejong Institute Foundation Korean Language Teachers Conference” held at the Shilla Hotel in Seoul, South Korea.

This annual conference was attended by Korean language instructors from various countries and aimed to improve the quality of Korean language instruction globally. During the training, Ms. Iva participated in various workshop sessions and discussions on teaching Korean as a foreign language.

In addition to academic training, participants were also invited to participate in cultural activities as part of strengthening their understanding of Korean cultural context. One of the interesting activities Ms. Iva participated in was a workshop on making bookmarks (bookmarks) from jagae (자개), a traditional Korean handicraft made from mother-of-pearl, rich in aesthetic and philosophical value.

Participation in this program demonstrates the commitment of the Korean Language and Culture Program at UGM to supporting the development of faculty competencies and expanding international academic networks. It is hoped that this experience will enrich teaching methods and have a positive impact on the learning process in the classroom.

Yogyakarta, 7/2025 — Two alumni from the Korean Language and Culture Study Program (BKK), Faculty of Cultural Sciences, Universitas Gadjah Mada (UGM), have once again made the program proud by earning the prestigious 2025 scholarship from the Indonesia Endowment Fund for Education (LPDP). They are Sekar Arum Anugrah Gusti (Class of 2018) and Asma Azizah (Class of 2010).

“I once applied for the GKS scholarship in 2024 but didn’t make it. Of course I was sad, but at the same time, I was curious about what would come next. As it turns out, God allowed me to gain work experience and meet many people from different walks of life. We exchanged insights on Korea—topics I had never studied in class. Those insights actually helped me prepare for the LPDP application, which, alhamdulillah, was successful. Had I gone straight to grad school in Korea back then, I might’ve missed those experiences. I hope to find a supportive environment in Korea that helps me grow even more.

To friends who may feel their Korean language ‘spark’ isn’t as bright as others (I’ve been there…), or who feel their knowledge isn’t useful after graduation—look a little closer. Each of us walks a unique path, shaped by different experiences and life choices. Especially for those of you considering graduate school—if you’re genuinely interested and feel ready for the process, it’s okay to pursue other majors, languages, or even countries. A background in Korean Language and Culture can actually be a powerful combo for the knowledge you have. And please never feel like you’re alone. If you’re lost or unsure, don’t hesitate to ask questions!”

My message, especially for those considering further study: make the most of the LPDP scholarship opportunity to continue your studies in Korea. The process may seem complicated with many requirements, but I believe it’s part of your growth. Scholarship preparation doesn’t happen overnight, so get involved in academic and non-academic activities from as early as your first semester—anything that can support your future scholarship applications. Don’t be shy to reach out to your seniors (sunbae) for help, both when preparing for scholarships and once you begin your studies in Korea. Stay motivated to keep learning and to represent the Korean Language and Culture program—and Indonesia—with pride! ”

Their stories serve as an inspiration for current students and alumni of BKK UGM. With perseverance, reflection, and thorough preparation, opportunities to pursue further studies abroad through scholarships are more attainable than ever.

Yogyakarta, June 2025 — Two students from the Korean Language and Culture Study Program, Faculty of Cultural Sciences, Universitas Gadjah Mada, have successfully been accepted into the Fast Track Bachelor’s–Master’s (S1–S2) Program at UGM. They are Fadisya Zata Amany and Raissa Aneswari, both from the 2022 batch.

The Fast Track program offers an opportunity for undergraduate students to continue to the master’s level and complete both degrees in a shorter period of time. Below are the reflections and messages shared by the selected students:

“Alhamdulillah, saya sangat bersyukur bisa diterima dalam program fast track S1–S2 di Universitas Gadjah Mada. Kesempatan ini menjadi awal baru lagi untuk terus belajar, memperluas wawasan, dan memperdalam keilmuan di bidang yang saya tekuni. Proses seleksi yang cukup menantang membuat saya banyak belajar tentang ketekunan, konsistensi, dan pentingnya persiapan yang matang. Saya berterima kasih kepada dosen-dosen, teman-teman dan khususnya kepada orang tua saya yang selalu memberikan dukungan serta semangat selama proses ini. Buat teman-teman yang lagi berjuang, jangan takut ambil kesempatan ya!”

“Jujur, awalnya nggak nyangka bisa lolos Fast Track. Waktu daftar, sempat ragu juga, jadi ya semangatnya nothing to lose aja.
