Batik and Kebaya by International Students at the Faculty of Cultural Sciences as A Form of Efforts in Solidarity and Preservation of Indonesian Cultural Identity

News Release Friday, 8 March 2024

SDGs 4: Quality Education

The Faculty of Cultural Sciences, Universitas Gadjah Mada is an academic environment with a focus on cultural studies. As one of the faculties that highly values cultural significance, it has gained interest from both local and international students. Each year, FIB welcomes over 100 international students from various countries. Some participate in exchange programs, while others are part of the INCULS program.

Interestingly, international students at FIB UGM actively participate in preserving and enriching Indonesia’s cultural heritage. One example is their adoption of traditional attire, such as batik and kebaya.

As one of Indonesia’s traditional clothes with profound philosophical meaning, kebaya is chosen by international students as an expression of their solidarity with Indonesia’s cultural identity.

The use of batik and kebaya by international students at the Faculty of Cultural Sciences, UGM, is not just an individual act. By wearing traditional Indonesian attire, they implicitly embrace the local culture, contributing positively to creating an inclusive and multicultural educational environment.

Alice Morgan, a student from Australia enrolled in the INCULS program, chose to wear kebaya and batik to attend batik course provided by the faculty. On Thursday, February 22, 2024, she expressed her deep appreciation for batik and its various motifs. At that time, she was accompanied by a friend from the United States who also, interestingly, wore batik and kebaya, even though she was not a student at FIB UGM. This serves as evidence that culture and art can serve as bridges that connect people from different countries and backgrounds.

INCULS Private Program Closing

News Release Friday, 1 March 2024

SDGs 4: Quality Education

On February 21st, 2024 at 12:00 – 13:00 (GMT+7), the INCULS private program with Dominique Addison Renee officially closed. The event, which was held in Room 420 of the Soegondo Building, was attended by the Director and Deputy Director of INCULS, Dominique, 2 teaching lecturers, and INCULS staff.

Dominique is a student from the United States who has completed the Private Program with INCULS. Through this program, she has learned a lot about Indonesian language and culture from January 9th – February 24th 2024.

On this occasion, Dominique delivered a speech about her experiences in Indonesia. She is very happy to be part of Universitas Gadjah Mada, which is the best university in Indonesia. Mbak Dominique started her learning process by enriching her vocabulary and exploring interesting topics in Indonesia. Apart from that, she also said that the most interesting thing about her experience was that her ability to speak Indonesian allowed her to build strong and good relationships with the Indonesian people.

Hopefully, this can be an inspiration for the younger generation to further preserve the Indonesian language. The large number of international students who come to INCULS to study Indonesian indicates that our national language is very global. Therefore, it is time for us to be proud of the language we have!
