Faculty Visit: High School Visit from SMK N 1 Tangerang to the Faculty of Cultural Sciences, Universitas Gadjah Mada

On Wednesday, January 24, 2024, the Faculty of Cultural Sciences received a visit from SMK N 1 Tangerang. The event took place at the Soegondo Auditorium from 10:00 to 11:30 AM. A total of 180 students, accompanied by 30 teachers/guides, participated in this event, creating an enthusiastic atmosphere among the participants.

This visit did not only became a valuable moment for the students of SMK N 1 Tangerang but also provided an opportunity for the Faculty of Cultural Sciences to introduce the academic world. The participants’ enthusiasm was proven from the numerous questions they asked. Student exchange became the topic that they were most interested in, as they eagerly asked for more information about the opportunities and how they could participate. Moreover, there were many questions about the interesting aspects of studying Anthropology that reflected the students’ interest in the broad and profound knowledge at the Faculty of Cultural Sciences, UGM.

Not only that, the students also showed a deep interest in getting tips and guidance on the admissions process at UGM, especially in the Faculty of Cultural Sciences. They enthusiastically asked about requirements, strategies, and everything that could enhance their chances to be accepted in UGM.

This visit did not only benefit the students but also marked as an important moment for the teachers. They hope that through this activity, their students will have a stronger desire to pursue higher education. They hope that the students will successfully achieve their dreams of being accepted in UGM, particularly in the Faculty of Cultural Sciences.

When the visit ended, the atmosphere of togetherness in the Soegondo Auditorium still could be felt. Students and teachers left with valuable experiences and new perspective that will help them plan their academic future. Hopefully this visit will be the first step that inspires students to pursue their dreams.

Collaboration Program between the UGM Faculty of Cultural Sciences and UMNU Kebumen

Dean of the Faculty of Cultural Sciences, Prof. Dr. Setiadi, M.Si approved the collaboration program proposed by Ma’arif Nahdlatul Ulama University Kebumen on July 17, 2023. This program is a collaborative seminar activity with the theme “Cross Cultural Understanding” which involves students of the Indonesian Language and Cultural Learning Service (INCULS) FIB, UGM, and the English Language Education Undergraduate Study Program, FKIP, UMNU Kebumen. This program is intended as a resource assignment for lecturers/teachers who are native speakers of English for enrichment lecture activities. This collaboration is carried out by proposing, organizing, and evaluating collaborative activity programs; which are scheduled for four years.

This program began to be realized on December 23 2023 by holding a Sharing Culture Talkshow event which was held at UMNU University Kebumen. In this event, the Faculty of Cultural Sciences sent several INCULS UGM students, including Sundas Ejaz from Pakistan, Nor Najinah Saad from Thailand, Sabrina Joy S. Tan from the Philippines, Mbemba Badjie from Gambia, and Ahmed Abdallah Faouzi Attia from Algeria. They are students studying culture at INCULS UGM and were accompanied in this series of events by Dr. Rudi Ekasiswanto, M. Hum. as Deputy Coordinator of INCULS UGM and Muhamad Zamchasari, S.S. as INCULS UGM teaching staff.

This event began with a Wayang Golek performance which told the multicultural history of Kebumen and continued with various Kebumen regional cultural performances including Kuda Lumping, Lawet Dance, and Pencak Silat Pagar Nusa by the students. Apart from that, traditional Kebumen culinary delights were also served to all participants. The next session was a talk show and presentation of the culture of each country by native speakers presented through INCULS FIB UGM.

This activity will become an annual program for students taking the Cross Cultural Understanding course organized by UMNU Kebumen together with the UGM Faculty of Cultural Sciences as their final project (UMNU Kebumen). This program aims to implement the Tri Dharma of Higher Education by developing collaborative activities that are mutually beneficial.

FIB Wins Second Place in the Gadjah Mada University Public Relations Award

On Friday, December 8 2023, the Faculty of Cultural Sciences, Gadjah Mada University won second place in the Gadjah Mada University Public Relations Award. This award was given in recognition of the success of the Faculty of Cultural Sciences in the Page Management category. This achievement is the result of dedication and innovation in the public relations program, which involves superior products in six categories, including page management, Instagram, TikTok, YouTube, press releases and communication campaigns. This achievement not only strengthens the faculty’s reputation but also becomes an inspiration for the entire academic community in developing innovation in the field of website development at the faculty level.

New British Ambassador to Indonesia, Dominic Jermey, Makes His First Official Visit to FIB UGM

The new British Ambassador to Indonesia, Dominic Jermey made his first official visit to Yogyakarta on 17 November 2023. On this occasion, he delivered a public lecture at the Faculty of Humanities, Universitas Gadjah Mada on UK-Indonesia bilateral relations in the fields of education, politics, climate change, digitalisation, arts and culture.

The event began with a warm welcome delivered by the Vice Dean for Research, Community Service, Cooperation, and Alumni, Dr. Mimi Savitri, M.A. In her opening speech, Dr. Mimi Savitri sincerely expressed her appreciation for the high level of bilateral cooperation that has existed between the UK and Indonesia over the years. She emphasised the importance of this relationship as a foundation for further cooperation in academic and social fields.

The next segment was Dominic Jermey’s ambassadorial speech. In his speech, he stated that he had high hopes for the students present in the room to become the successors of the country’s development relay. He highlighted some crucial issues that are being faced by all countries in the world, namely climate change. According to him, the issue of climate change must be brought up and discussed further because the earth that is inhabited today will one day be inherited by younger generations. Students – he continued – can guard this problem according to their portion.

In the last half of his speech, Dominic Jermey warmly welcomed students who had the intention to continue their studies in the UK. He expressed his appreciation for the dedication of the prospective students. Dominic also encouraged the students and gave them the full support of the UK government to ensure the success of their academic journey in the country. In addition, he emphasised the importance of cooperation between countries in supporting knowledge exchange and global human resource development.

The public lecture session was closed with a Q&A session, where participants were given the opportunity to ask questions directly to Dominic Jermey. This session created an interactive atmosphere that allowed for an exchange of ideas and views between the speaker and the audience. Afterwards, the event was closed with a group selfie session.

Tracing the Paths of Three Historians: A Journey in Compiling the History of Indonesia

UGM Department of History successfully organised a seminar entitled “From Sartono Kartodirdjo, Soedjatmoko, and Moh. Ali Towards Future Indonesian History Writing (I)” on 31 October 2023 at the Auditorium of Soegondo Building 7th Floor. The event was attended by around 100 participants from researchers, students, and the general public.

The seminar aimed to explore the future of Indonesian history writing by exploring the thoughts of figures such as Sartono Kartodirdjo, Soedjatmoko, and Moh. Ali. Three keynote speakers, Gani Achmad Jailani from Universitas Padjadjaran, Priska Marsila from Alumni UIN Sunan Gunung Jati, and Wahyu Purwiyastuti from Satya Wacana Christian University, presented materials covering various aspects of Indonesian historiography.

In addition to the keynote speakers, the seminar also involved 17 co-speakers who were selected through a call for papers selection. The participants were divided into six panels according to the predetermined theme groups. The hope is that this seminar can provide inspiration for the development of Indonesian history writing in the future.

A joint discussion session moderated by Prof Bambang Purwanto concluded the seminar. In closing, Prof Bambang asked interesting questions about the need to discuss the philosophy of history and whether the Indonesian-centric approach is relevant. He also emphasised that this seminar was the beginning of a deeper discussion on the philosophical aspects of history writing.
