SDGs 17: Partnerships for the Goals

On Wednesday, February 28th, 2024 and Thursday, February 29th, 2024, the Faculty of Cultural Sciences sent lecturers, education staff and the Dharma Wanita group to conduct Anjangsana which was part of the 78th Anniversary of the Faculty of Cultural Sciences. In this activity, they made a pilgrimage to the Sawitsari Tomb, which is the grave of the UGM extended family, to remember and pray for their predecessors. Apart from that, they also had the opportunity to visit the homes of professors, lecturers and educational staff at the Faculty of Cultural Sciences, UGM who had retired from their duties.

This activity was carried out with the aim of maintaining and strengthening the existing friendship. Anjangsana acts as a sign that shows appreciation for his contribution and role when he is retired. In this case, Anjangsana is an important event which is a sign and reminder that he, who has retired from his duties, remains and will always be an important part of the big family of the Faculty of Cultural Sciences, Universitas Gadjah Mada.

SDGs 4: Quality Education

On Friday, February 23rd, 2024 and Monday, February 24th, 2024, the Faculty of Cultural Sciences held a Poetry Reading Festival as part of the 78th Anniversary of the Faculty of Cultural Sciences. Participants in this festival came from lecturers, staff, students and alumni who added to the excitement of this activity.

Not just reading poetry, the Vice Dean for Finance, Assets and Human Resources, Suray Agung Nugroho, S.S., M.A., Ph.D., also enlivened this event by singing a Korean song which was a silentsil witness to his journey to learn Korean Language. Interestingly, the committee also prepared door prizes for lucky participants.

This activity was further enlivened by the students’ performance who read their own poetry. This showed the unlimited creativity of the Faculty of Cultural Sciences students. Apart from that, this is proof that poetry can play an important role as a tool for expressing oneself, thoughts and feelings that may not be able to be conveyed verbally.

INCULS Private Program Closing

SDGs 4: Quality Education

On February 21st, 2024 at 12:00 – 13:00 (GMT+7), the INCULS private program with Dominique Addison Renee officially closed. The event, which was held in Room 420 of the Soegondo Building, was attended by the Director and Deputy Director of INCULS, Dominique, 2 teaching lecturers, and INCULS staff.

Dominique is a student from the United States who has completed the Private Program with INCULS. Through this program, she has learned a lot about Indonesian language and culture from January 9th – February 24th 2024.

On this occasion, Dominique delivered a speech about her experiences in Indonesia. She is very happy to be part of Universitas Gadjah Mada, which is the best university in Indonesia. Mbak Dominique started her learning process by enriching her vocabulary and exploring interesting topics in Indonesia. Apart from that, she also said that the most interesting thing about her experience was that her ability to speak Indonesian allowed her to build strong and good relationships with the Indonesian people.

Hopefully, this can be an inspiration for the younger generation to further preserve the Indonesian language. The large number of international students who come to INCULS to study Indonesian indicates that our national language is very global. Therefore, it is time for us to be proud of the language we have!

Opening of the INCULS Intensive Program with Ritsumeikan Asia Pacific University

On February 19th, 2024, INCULS opened the Ritsumeikan Asia Pacific University intensive program which took place in Sidang Pimpinan Room, Poerbatjaraka Building, Faculty of Cultural Sciences, UGM from 9:00 – 10:00 AM (GMT+7). The event was attended by the Director and Deputy Director of INCULS, 7 students from Ritsumeikan Asia Pacific University who were accompanied by their supervisor, Mrs. Tari, and 7 INCULS tutors.

This activity aimed to introduce INCULS with a material presentation regarding teachers, staff, assessment criteria, and schedule. In addition, they had the opportunity to get to know INCULS students and tutors. The event then continued with a group photo.

Interestingly, on this occasion, they had the experience of a faculty tour where they could learn more about the Faculty of Cultural Sciences and the interesting details about it.

Collaboration between Students and Society: Beach Cleaning Activities by Cultural Anthropology Students and Adger Students, Norway in Pekalongan

On Tuesday, January 16 2024, several Cultural Anthropology students together with three students from Adger University, Norway visited a mangrove forest managed by the NGO Bintari Pekalongan, Central Java. In this activity, students discussed with youth and local people who were actively involved in maintaining the mangrove forest on the northern coast of Pekalongan.

Initially, mangroves were planted by a youth group called Antaraha Berkah Mandiri or Karya Mandiri as part of efforts to preserve the momentum of national economic development. After the mangrove planting was underway, the Bintari NGO took part in the maintenance process.

The visit to the mangrove forest closed with activities to clean the shoreline which was filled with rubbish brought in from the sea. Various types of waste ranging from plastic, wood and household waste are collected together in sacks as an effort to preserve beaches and mangrove forests on the shoreline. Local residents, Cultural Anthropology students and Adger University students then took photos together before returning to the settlement.

The research carried out by Cultural Anthropology students at Gadjah Mada University is part of efforts to improve the quality of education in understanding the realities of social life in line with the 4th SDGs point. The research activities were carried out together with Norwegian students as a form of implementing SDGs at point 17. Lastly, the activity of cleaning up rubbish on the shoreline was one of the embodiments of SDGs at point 14, namely life below water.
