SDGs 4: Quality Education | SDGs 17: Partnerships for the Goals

A public lecture on Korean culture was successfully held in the Auditorium of Soegondo Building, Faculty of Cultural Sciences, Universitas Gadjah Mada. This public lecture was made possible through the collaboration of the Korean Language and Culture study program at the Faculty of Cultural Sciences, UGM, with the Korean Cultural Center Indonesia (KCCI), Korea Creative Content Agency (KOCCA) Indonesia, as well as the Ministry of Culture, Sports, and Tourism of the Republic of Korea.

The event started at 13:00 (GMT+7) with the inauguration of the ‘Korean Culture Njogo’ team by the director of the Korean Cultural Center Indonesia (KCCI), Mr. Kim Yong Woon. Subsequently, the event proceeded with the opening by the MC and a performance of Samulnori, a traditional Korean musical instrument ensemble. Following this, attendees were invited to stand and sing the national anthems of Indonesia and the Republic of Korea. After the anthem singing, the lecture commenced with an address by the director of the Korean Cultural Center Indonesia (KCCI), Mr. Kim Yong Woon.

The lecture was divided into three sessions. The first session was delivered by Mr. Suray Agung Nugroho, S.S., M.A., Ph.D., a lecturer from the Korean Language and Culture study program at the Faculty of Cultural Sciences, UGM, under the theme “Hallyu Today and Tomorrow.” In this session, the history and development of Hallyu in Indonesia up to its current state were discussed, along with future prospects for Hallyu.

The lecture continued with the second speaker, Ms. Dwita Rizki, who is a translator of Korean literature. In line with her profession, Ms. Dwita Rizki presented on the topic of “Encounter of Korean Literary Book Translators,” sharing her experiences as a translator of Korean literature, from the beginning of her career to tips for becoming a professional translator.

Subsequently, the lecture session concluded with the third speaker, Mr. Kim Young Soo, the director of the Korea Creative Content Agency (KOCCA) Indonesia. The topic addressed was “Hallyu in the World, the Leader of the Creative Economy (Focusing on the case of KOREA 360).” This session discussed the role of Hallyu in the global creative economy. Additionally, the presentation covered KOREA 360, a product of KOCCA aimed at introducing Hallyu to the world through creative content.

Following the lecture sessions, participants were allowed to ask questions. In addition to questions, KCCI and KOCCA also prepared a quiz for the participants. As a token of appreciation, KCCI and KOCCA awarded prizes to both questioners and participants who successfully answered quiz questions. The event concluded with a group photo session and the screening of ON THE K: O.

This “Public Lecture on Korean Culture” aimed to provide insight to the public regarding the development of Korean culture in Indonesia and its future prospects. Furthermore, it aimed to serve as a platform for ongoing collaboration between the study program and the aforementioned parties. This aligns with the goals of sustainable development, namely Quality Education and Partnerships to Achieve the Goals.

The Korean Language and Culture Study Program are Sending Two Students to Ginseng Country (South Korea)

News Release Tuesday, 27 February 2024

SDGs 4: Quality Education | SDGs 17: Partnerships for the Goals

As in previous years, in the even semester of the 2023/2024 Academic Year, the Korean Language and Culture Study Program are sending two students to South Korea to participate in a student exchange program. The two students managed to get the opportunity to study at Busan University of Foreign Studies and Soongsil University during the Spring 2024 period. This program is a result of collaboration between the Korean Language and Culture Study Program and these two universities. Not only that, they also have the opportunity to obtain a Global Korea Scholarship scholarship which is also the result of collaboration between the Korean Language and Culture Study Program and the Global Korea Scholarship. The following is a brief introduction from the two students.

The first student is Raden Ajeng Dian Sari, a student from batch 2022, who chose Busan University of Foreign Studies as her destination university. She saw this as a very valuable opportunity for herself. Through this program, she wants to experience the things that will be the key to her success in the future. She also advised her friends to never be afraid to try, because we are all stronger than we think. The second student is Rohadatul ‘Aisy Hamdaini from batch 2022, who will explore new experiences at Soongsil University. At first, she never expected to get this opportunity. So she was very grateful. Through this program, she has a vision to balance her academic and non-academic activities. She hopes that she will be able to explore the language and culture in Korea. Finally, she said “it is better to regret having done something, than to regret not having done it.”

With this, fellow students from the Korean Language and Culture Study Program and others are expected to have greater enthusiasm and strong motivation to achieve their dreams. Moreover, the Faculty of Cultural Sciences really supports the students to participate in international mobility. The existence of strong cooperation between the Faculty of Cultural Sciences and global institutions serves as a support from the faculty to facilitate students in undertaking international programs. And with these collaborations, various programs are created in which students can participate.
