Leiden University and Faculty of Cultural Sciences, UGM Strengthen Partnership: Focus on Double Degree Programs and Philology

SDGs 4: Quality Education | SDGs 17: Partnerships for the Goals

On Tuesday, February 6, 2024, Leiden University conducted a significant visit to the Faculty of Cultural Sciences, Universitas Gadjah Mada (UGM) to discuss the potential collaboration in a double degree program. Previously, Leiden University had established cooperation with the Department of Archaeology at UGM for the master’s program in archaeology, and this time, the focus shifted to the Department of Anthropology. Additionally, they proposed collaboration with the Language, Literature, and Javanese Cultural Studies Program, particularly in the field of philology.

The double degree program is seen as an initiative to enrich students’ academic experiences, providing them with the opportunity to earn degrees from two leading universities simultaneously. By further collaborating with the Faculty of Cultural Sciences at UGM, Leiden University aims to create broader and high-quality educational opportunities.

In this discussion, academics and representatives from both sides shared their perspectives and ideas, establishing a strong foundation for sustainable collaboration. This collaborative plan is expected not only to benefit students but also to enhance research and publications at both universities.

The collaboration between Leiden University and the Faculty of Cultural Sciences at UGM is envisioned to serve as a model inspiring cross-border cooperation in higher education. The deepening of this relationship holds great promise for further developing academic, cultural, and research potential between the two universities committed to creating an inclusive and innovative learning environment.

Culturepreneur Workshop by the Archaeology Department, Faculty of Cultural Sciences, Universitas Gadjah Mada

The Department of Archaeology, Faculty of Cultural Sciences, Universitas Gadjah Mada, in collaboration with the Joint Secretariat of Main Partner Civilians, organized a workshop entitled “Culturepreneur in Heritage Areas.” The focus of this activity was the cultural heritage area of Lasem, Rembang Regency, Central Java, which has numerous tangible and intangible relics. The workshop activities included lectures, field observations, and the subsequent design of heritage-based commodities.

The classes and observations took place in Rembang from January 26 to 28, 2024. Several topics were discussed during the event, namely “Business Development through Understanding and Respecting Local Culture” presented by Sektiadi, S.S., M.Hum., “Branding of Old Town Areas” with the speaker Fauzie Helmy, and “Cultural Heritage as Inspiration for Creative Products” presented by D.S. Nugrahani, M.A.

The participants in this activity, coordinated by Dr. Mahirta, M.A., were twenty students from the 2021 and 2022 cohorts. They were divided into five groups, each tasked with creating mock-up designs of products inspired by the cultural heritage of the Lasem area. The ability to develop urban cultural heritage-based products is expected to equip students to contribute to the sustainability of communities in cities, especially those with cultural heritage. [z]

Open House by Archaeology Department: Magister of Archaeology

Master of Archaeology Study Program, Faculty of Cultural Sciences, is organizing an Open House event scheduled to take place on Thursday, February 1, 2024, from 15:30 to 17:00 Western Indonesian Time (GMT+7). This activity aims to introduce the available programs in the Master of Archaeology study program to prospective students. The event is conducted online, which enables participants to join and participate despite their location.

This event is one of the forms of responsibility in rthe realization of SDGs 4: “Quality Education,” which emphasizes the importance of providing equal and inclusive access to quality education and promoting academic opportunities for prospective students. Thus, the Open House does not only create an opportunity to introduce the Master of Archaeology study program with its interesting variety of programs but also supports the goals of sustainable education.
