The Department of Archaeology, Faculty of Cultural Sciences, Universitas Gadjah Mada, in collaboration with the Joint Secretariat of Main Partner Civilians, organized a workshop entitled “Culturepreneur in Heritage Areas.” The focus of this activity was the cultural heritage area of Lasem, Rembang Regency, Central Java, which has numerous tangible and intangible relics. The workshop activities included lectures, field observations, and the subsequent design of heritage-based commodities.
The classes and observations took place in Rembang from January 26 to 28, 2024. Several topics were discussed during the event, namely “Business Development through Understanding and Respecting Local Culture” presented by Sektiadi, S.S., M.Hum., “Branding of Old Town Areas” with the speaker Fauzie Helmy, and “Cultural Heritage as Inspiration for Creative Products” presented by D.S. Nugrahani, M.A.
The participants in this activity, coordinated by Dr. Mahirta, M.A., were twenty students from the 2021 and 2022 cohorts. They were divided into five groups, each tasked with creating mock-up designs of products inspired by the cultural heritage of the Lasem area. The ability to develop urban cultural heritage-based products is expected to equip students to contribute to the sustainability of communities in cities, especially those with cultural heritage. [z]
