Faculty of Cultural Sciences Participates in the 13th Universitas Gadjah Mada Cultural Festival

Adil Ka’ Talino, Bacuramin Ka’ Saruga, Basengat Ka’ Jubata, Culture Friends! Cultural Festival UGM Residence was back this year with a variety of appreciation and celebration of the diversity of the archipelago. Cultural Festival 13 comes with the theme “ , ” which was held on Saturday, June 1 until 2, 2024 at 14.00 – 22. Cultural Festival 13 was enlivened by Cultural Festival 13 Collaboration works, Cultural Art performances from Regional Student Organizations, Cultural quizzes for UGM Residence Dormitory Residents, titles of UGM Residence Works, UGMR Club, PMM MBKM, as well as Faculties and Schools, selection of Putra-Putri Culfest from Regional Student Organizations, and Guest Stars performances. This event was open to all UGM students, lecturers, education staff and the general public free of charge. A festive atmosphere was created at Cultural Festival 13 also with the presence of 23 fully participating student organizations, adding color and spirit to each of their actions and performances!

On this valuable occasion, of course, the Faculty of Cultural Sciences did not want to be left behind to introduce its culture. Assisted by members of the Lembaga Eksekutif Mahasiswa  Fakultas Ilmu Budaya Universitas Gadjah Mada or abbreviated as LEM FIB UGM, the Faculty of Cultural Sciences set up a booth at the Cultural Festival. At the booth, many of the best cultural works of the Faculty students were exhibited such as fabrics, dresses, musical instruments, accessories, poetry, and many more. Interestingly, they also provided games with prizes for the visitors who came to make the booth look not boring and could attract people to visit. The requirement to play the prize game in the form of Spin Wheel was to follow Instagram @fib_ugm and @lemfib_ugm or upload an instastory by tagging the two accounts. Visitors who wanted to take pictures could take photos in front of the beautiful mirror that had been provided. The prizes provided for visitors who won the game were very diverse ranging from drinking water bottles, stickers, stationery, and others. Many visitors felt satisfied and entertained.

Cross Cultural Experience at Progressive School Bumi Shalawat Sidoarjo

One of the staff of Japanese Language and Culture Study Program, Akbar Rizqi Dhea Habibi, was invited by Progressive School Bumi Shalawat Sidoarjo to fill the Cross Cultural Experience activity on May 6-7, 2024. The activity was attended by Japanese Class extracurricular students. This activity consisted of a sharing session by Akbar Rizqi, accompanied by an international student from Japan, Yoshikawa Ryoga, who is studying at INCULS FIB UGM. The topic raised in the activity was discussing school life and environment in Japan and Indonesia. In addition, it was followed by a workshop and practice of writing Japanese calligraphy (Shuuji). In the sharing session, Akbar Rizqi provided in-depth insights on how to get a scholarship, learn Japanese language and culture, and shared experiences about school life and environment in Japan. There was also a sharing session by Yoshikawa Ryoga about his experience as a foreign student in Indonesia.

In addition to the sharing session, the event also included a workshop and practice of writing Japanese calligraphy, known as Shuuji. In this session, the participants were taught the basic techniques of writing Japanese calligraphy, which not only enriched their knowledge of Japanese art and culture, but also practiced their fine motor skills. This activity not only provided academic and cultural insights, but also strengthened the bond between students through collaborative activities. The Cross Cultural Experience went smoothly and left a deep impression on all participants. The students were very enthusiastic listening to the experiences and tips shared by the speakers, which are expected to motivate them to pursue study abroad opportunities, especially in Japan.

Arabic Literature UGM Presents Practitioner Lecturer for Tourism Arabic Lecture

Yogyakarta, Thursday, June 6, 2024 – The Arabic Literature Study Program of Universitas Gadjah Mada (UGM) held an offline Tourism Arabic Lecture at the Faculty of Cultural Sciences, UGM. The lecture presented a practitioner from UGM Faculty of Cultural Sciences Alumni, Ghifari Yuristiadhi Masyhari Makhasi, S.S., M.A., M.M., C.H.E. who currently works as a Tourism Lecturer at UGM Vocational School. In this activity, Ghifari shared experiences and practical knowledge on how to become a proficient Arabic tour guide.

The students were very enthusiastic about the lecture, especially because they could directly interact with practitioners and get first-hand insight into the challenges and opportunities in the tourism industry using Arabic. Ghifari also provided a tour guide simulation, where students were invited to play the role of tour guides and tourists. With this lecture, students are expected to be better prepared for the world of work and have additional skills that can increase their competitiveness in the global market.

This lecture is part of the UGM Arabic Literature Study Program’s efforts to improve the quality of education and curriculum relevance to industry needs.

Student Business Plan Presentation in Entrepreneurship and Self-Development Course by Arabic Literature

Yogyakarta, Wednesday, June 5, 2024 – Even Semester of the 2023/2024 Academic Year, the Arabic Literature UGM Study Program successfully held an Entrepreneurship and Self-Development Lecture. After inviting alumni to be practitioner lecturers, this lecture ended with a presentation of student business plans.

Together with Reisa Nurma Borurega, S.S., an alumnus of Arabic Literature UGM who is an expert in the field of digital marketing, students explained the business plans they would run. The presentation of each group was greeted enthusiastically by the students who were seen actively asking questions and discussing with the speakers. Through this activity, it is hoped that the entrepreneurial potential of students can be further developed.

Yogyakarta, June 4, 2024 – The Arabic Literature Study Program of Universitas Gadjah Mada held a National Seminar on “Arabic Language Development in Various Media” held at Soegondo Building S709, Faculty of Cultural Sciences, Universitas Gadjah Mada. This event was held by the UGM Arabic Literature Study Program as a form of respect and appreciation for the dedication given by Dr. Moh. Masrukhi, M.Hum., who has devoted himself for 35 years in the world of education.

The event was attended by Suray Agung Nugroho S.S., M.A., Ph.D., as Vice Dean of the Faculty of Cultural Sciences (online), Dr. Sudibyo, M.Hum., as Head of the Department of Language and Literature, Dr. Zulfa Purnamawati, S.S., M.Hum., as Head of the Arabic Literature Study Program, lecturers and colleagues of Dr. Moh. Masrukhi, M.Hum., as well as students and alumni.

The event began with the opening by the MC, recitation of the holy verses of the Qur’an, singing Indonesia Raya and Gadjah Mada Hymn, remarks, National Seminar program, delivery of impressions and messages, tumpeng cutting procession, giving mementos, reading prayers together, and ending with closing.

The National Seminar “Arabic Language Development in Various Media” was hosted by Dr. Arief Ma’nawi, S.S., M.Hum. as moderator with three speakers:

  • Prof. Dr. Syamsul Hadi, S.U., M.A., discussed about “Form and Meaning in Fi’il Tsulatsi and Ruba’i”. He explained that the meaning and form of verbs in Arabic are very numerous and there are 58 forms that have never been revealed. This research will provide new convenience in the productivity of the formation of fi’il mazid. in terms of form and meaning, as well as in terms of meaning and form.
  • Prof. Dr. H. Tulus Musthofa, L.C., M.A., with the topic “The Development of Semantics in Arabic Viewed from Modern Linguistics”, highlighted the development of new meanings in old words, when conditions and situations affect the meaning, and also the many uses of language in different situations and uses.
  • Dr. Moh. Masrukhi, M.Hum., who presented on “Verbal and Nonverbal Elements of Egyptian Print Media Commercial Advertisements: Discourse Analysis”, explained that every advertisement contains a message as well as meaning. Advertisements in Egypt besides having a semantic form, also have a semiotic form. Most magazine advertisements in Egypt do not express verbal elements, but express nonverbal elements. Ads also have nonverbal elements that can be interpreted contextually.

Through the National Seminar “Arabic Language Development in Various Media”, it is hoped that the research that has been carried out can be published and widely accessed and individual and institutional research cooperation will be stronger.
