Broadening Korean Studies: Research Collaboration Agreement and UGM Lecturer’s Presentation in the DU CMSP Colloquium and 2024 DCU CMS ASKA DU CMSP Joint International Conference

News Release Wednesday, 15 May 2024

SDGs 4: Quality Education | SDGs 4: Cultural diversity | SDGs 4: Education for sustainability | SDGs 4: Education in developing | SDG 8: Decent work and economic growth | SDG 9: Industry innovation and infrastructure | SDGs 9: Affordable access | SDGs 9: Cooperation | SDG 10: Reduced inequality | SDGs 10: Culture | SDG 11: Sustainable cities and communities | SDGs 11: Community | SDG 16: Peace justice and strong institutions | SDGs 16: Accountable institutions | SDGs 17: Partnerships for the Goals | SDGs 17: Capacity building | SDGs 17: Foreign direct investments | SDGs 17: Global partnership

On Thursday, April 25th 2024, Ms. Alfiana, a lecturer from the Korean language and culture major, presented her paper titled “The social economic background of Indonesian students and their determining factor to study in Korea” in the Daegu University Center for Multiculturalism and Social Policy’s (DU CMSP) colloquium. The colloquium was attended by multidisciplinary educational professors and researchers who showed their interest in Korean studies in Indonesia by asking numerous questions despite the lack of research in both countries.

Currently, research on Korean studies is dominated by Korean language-related topics. But unfortunately, compared to the Southeast Asia region’s countries, such as Vietnam and Thailand, the number of research studies was left behind. Thus, DU CMSP welcomes the new path of research collaboration with the Faculty of Cultural Science (FIB) at UGM and offers a research collaboration agreement. The agreement was signed by DU CMSP’s chief, Prof. Yun Jae Woon, after a colloquium, and later signed by the Dean of the Faculty of Cultural Science, Prof. Dr. Setiadi, S. Sos, and M. Si in Indonesia. This collaborative research agreement expects to build strong cooperation between two institutions and boost the number of research publications in Indonesia and Korea, especially those related to Korean studies. Research and publications in the long term have a role to play in offering problem resolutions for some current issues in Korea, such as inequality among immigrants, which becomes the world’s sustainable development goal number 10, to reduce inequality.

The lecture continued to the next day, April 26th 2024, at the 2024 DCU CMS ASKA DU CMSP Joint International Conference, which was held at Daegu Catholic University in Gyeongsan City, Korea. A representative of UGM, Ms. Alfiana, was given a chance to open the first term by presenting her research, “The culture shock and reverse culture shock among Indonesian exchange students: focusing on UGM students.” The joint international conference between the Center of Multicultural Society of Daegu Catholic University, the Association for the Studies of Korean Living Abroad, and the Center for Multiculturalism and Social Policy has opened up chances for Korean students and professors to understand the condition of Indonesian exchange students in Korea. Some students from UGM also listened to the lecturers by zoom. In the future, it is expected to hold a joint international conference in Indonesia.

This phase of their academic pursuit is generously funded by the Ministry of National Development Planning (PPN)/Bappenas.

However, the program’s scope extends beyond national borders. Following the completion of their initial year, participants will have the invaluable opportunity to further their studies at one of our esteemed partner universities in Japan. The month of Ramadan has passed. Visits from outside the region to the Faculty of Humanities, Universitas Gadjah Mada are busy again. This time, on April 29, 2024 at 9 am, the faculty was visited by younger siblings who came all the way from Aceh, namely the modern boarding school MA Teuku Chiek Oemar Diyan. Wearing polite and closed clothes typical of the city of Mecca portico in green and combined with black suits and caps for men, 104 students and 6 accompanying teachers entered the auditorium in an orderly and enthusiastic manner while taking pictures and recording videos. The MC opened and warmly welcomed their arrival, followed by remarks from school representatives. “From the tip of Aceh, the first time to Java, many cultural differences are found so that we have to adapt a lot. Therefore, please apologize if there are mistakes made by our students,” said one of the accompanying teachers who gave a speech.

Next, they watched video screenings and quizzes. This session not only practiced concentration, but also increased knowledge about Universitas Gadjah Mada and the Faculty of Cultural Sciences in particular. To add more insight to the students, an additional session was provided, namely a sharing session of Prof. Irwan’s journey from Aceh to become a professor at UGM. He gave motivation that villagers can go international if they go to UGM. FIB also does not see where we are from because everyone is diverse, “Acehnese nutrition is still good because they eat fish, which is lacking in business, so let’s try and Insha Allah we will meet again here,” he said. Mas Yusuf, who is the staff of the academic and student affairs department, also conveyed some more specific things about academics, and introduced the web which has complete information. The students’ enthusiasm was even more apparent during the questioning session. The event was closed with a very entertaining performance from the students.

Wignyasta UGM Achieves Outstanding Achievement: First Place in the UNESA Javanese Literature Reporting Competition

HEADLINESNews ReleaseStudent's Activity Tuesday, 30 January 2024

SDGs 4: Quality Education | SDGs 8: Decent Work and Economic Growth | SDGs 10: Reduced Inequalities | SDGs 11: Sustainable Cities and Communities | SDGs 17: Partnerships for the Goals

The Department of Javanese Language, Literature, and Culture at Faculty of Cultural Sciences, Universitas Gadjah Mada (UGM) has once again achieved a prestigious achievement. This time, the Wignyasta UGM group successfully won first place in the Javanese Literature Reporting Competition organized by Universitas Negeri Surabaya (UNESA). The competition took place from November 7, 2023, until the announcement on December 3, 2023, online.

The Javanese literature reporting produced by Wignyasta UGM is titled “Sapa sing Temen, Bakal Tinemu.” In this report, the Wignyasta UGM team interviewed Nini Klenyem, a Javanese literature writer from the past to the present. Nini Klenyem tells the story of her ups and downs in publishing her work. Even though she did not continue her formal education like most people, her strong determination to create brought her works to become more diverse and published until today.

The Wignyasta UGM group consists of four students of Javanese Language, Literature, and Culture from the 2023 class, namely Alma Syahwalani, Bernadetta Rahayuning Tyas, Rachel Aulia, and Dian Nitami.

Etymologically, Wignyasta comes from the word “wignyan,” which means “3 sandhangan panyigeg,” and “asta” which comes from the Javanese word for “hand.” The word “wignyan” is interpreted as having a value of 3, while “asta” is interpreted as having a value of 2, resulting in the number 32. By following the sengkalan system, the numbers are reversed to become 23. “We made it our team name to lift the 2023 Batch,” Alma revealed in an interview on Thursday (December 21, 2023).

The process of creating the report was not without challenges. Alma explained, “In the creation of the report text, we faced the obstacle of having to know and use the appropriate Javanese language level, especially when interviewing Nini Klenyem. We also faced other obstacles such as limited storage on our devices, while we had to revise the work.”

“However, Alhamdulillah, we managed to overcome all of that so that the reportation work was ready to be competed. The creation of this Javanese literature report was also not without the guidance of Ibu Wiwien (Dra. Wiwien Widyawati Rahayu, M.A), our lecturer of the “Introduction to Javanese Literature” course. She also helped in the selection of the interviewee, because we did not have much information about Javanese literature writers,” Alma continued.

With the achievement achieved by Wignyasta UGM, it is hoped that students of the Department of Javanese Language, Literature, and Culture of UGM can continue to improve their skills and knowledge related to Javanese culture, language, and literature. It is expected that students will continue to be enthusiastic in creating, as well as be able to use their time to achieve achievements. This achievement is also in line with point four of the Sustainable Development Goals, Quality Education, which is to provide and develop the quality of education.
