Description
Fakultas Ilmu Budaya, Universitas Gadjah Mada and One Asia Foundation will conduct a seminar on Asian community and its development in globalization. Consisting of lectures and in-depth discussions, the seminar will be focused on the Asian region from social, economic, political and culture aspects. Experts of Asian studies will be invited to deliver the prepared lectures. The course is intended to deepen understanding of Asian region and globalization from different approaches and provide a setting for academic interaction among Indonesian scholars. By these means, the seminar can hopefully pave the way for future collaboration in generating knowledge about Asia region and the study of social and humanities. Indonesian Students in Cairo Knowledge Production in Transnational Social Spaces

Links and knowledge networks between the Malay-Indonesian world and the Middle East have a long history. At present there are about 3 500 Indonesian students enrolled at Al-Azhar University in Cairo. What does student mobility („intellectual pilgrimage“) mean for their visions of self and society? And how are cultural orientations in Indonesia influenced by academic migrants and alumni from the Middle East?
This paper will focus on the social conditions for the production of knowledge by investigating the ways how Indonesian students in Cairo organize their everyday life. It is based on two weeks of fieldwork in Cairo in December 2014 as part of a larger project on transnational academic cultures of cooperation.
