The Faculty of Cultural Sciences was established on 3 March 1946 as the Faculty of Literature, Philosophy, and Culture. The faculty has since been known under six names:
1. Faculty of Literature, Philosophy, and Culture (3 March 1946 – 18 December 1949)
2. Faculty of Literature and Philosophy (19 December 1949 – 13 August 1950)
3. Faculty of Literature, Pedagogy, and Philosophy (14 August 1950 – 14 October 1955)
4. Faculty of Literature and Culture (15 October 1955 – 6 October 1982)
5. Faculty of Literature (7 October 1982 – 22 June 2001)
6. Faculty of Cultural Sciences (23 June 2001 – present)
The first change in the faculty’s name (19 December 1949) coincided with the formal establishment of Universitas Gadjah Mada as the first state university in Indonesia. As time passed, several of the faculty’s departments were split off as new faculties, including the Faculty of Geography (from the Earth Sciences Department), the Faculty of Philosophy (from the Philosophy Department), and the Faculty of Psychology (from the Pedagogy Department). One department even became its own university, the State University of Yogyakarta (originally the Institute of Teaching and Education Sciences of Yogyakarta).
Presently, the Faculty of Cultural Sciences, Universitas Gadjah Mada, offers a graduate program at the baccalaureate level and a postgraduate program at the master’s and doctoral levels. The baccalaureate program includes eleven departments: Anthropology and Culture, Archeology, History, Arabic Literature, Indonesian Literature, English Literature, Japanese Literature, Korean Language, Regional Indonesian Literatures, French Literature, and Tourism. Since 2011, the faculty has offered two international courses at the baccalaureate level, namely the English Literature and Tourism programs. The faculty’s postgraduate programs at the master’s level are Anthropology, Archeology, History, Literature, Linguistics, and American Studies. Two doctoral level programs are offered: Humanities and American Studies. The Faculty of Cultural Sciences also offers Indonesian-language and -culture education to foreigners through its Indonesian Culture and Language Learning Services (INCULS).
Until 2008, the Faculty of Cultural Sciences offered a diploma-level program. Based on Decree of the Rector of UGM No. 518/P/SK/HT/2008, passed on 27 October 2008, the diploma-level study programs of the Faculty of Cultural Sciences were combined with diploma-level study programs of other faculties to establish the Vocational School. However, the Faculty of Cultural Sciences continues to be responsible for diploma-level students from the class of 2008 and earlier.
