UGM Arabic Study Program Students Win 2nd Place in Essay Presentation Competition at Arabic Fair UNS 2025

News Release Monday, 3 November 2025

Yogyakarta, October 18, 2025 – Students from the Arabic Study Program, Faculty of Cultural Sciences, Universitas Gadjah Mada (UGM), have once again brought pride to their university at the national level. The team, consisting of Muhammad Al Hasan and Faqih Hidayatulloh, successfully won 2nd Place in the Essay Presentation Competition at the Arabic Fair 2025.

The Arabic Fair 2025 is an annual competition organized by the Arabic Literature Study Program, Faculty of Cultural Sciences, Universitas Sebelas Maret (UNS), and supported by the QISAR Arabic Student Association. The event serves as a platform to broaden academic perspectives and enhance students’ competencies in Arabic language and literature.

In the Essay Presentation category, Muhammad Al Hasan and Faqih Hidayatulloh competed against participants from universities across Indonesia. The category challenged students not only to compose their ideas in a written essay but also to present them persuasively and comprehensively before the judges. Through determination and hard work, the UGM team demonstrated their exceptional quality, securing the 2nd best position and outperforming many other competitors. Remarkably, both are first-semester students, making their achievement even more impressive as they competed alongside senior-level participants.

Expressing their gratitude, the team emphasized the importance of confidence and perseverance in academic pursuits. “We worked day and night to prepare for this competition. But we believe this achievement is not the end of our journey, it’s just the beginning of a long road ahead,” said Muhammad Al Hasan on behalf of the team.

The accomplishment of Muhammad Al Hasan and Faqih Hidayatulloh adds another milestone to the list of achievements of UGM’s Arabic Study Program students at the national level. Their success is expected to inspire and motivate fellow students to continue participating actively in competitions and academic initiatives. The Faculty of Cultural Sciences at UGM extends its warmest congratulations to the team for their remarkable achievement.

UGM Arabic Study Program Students Participate in Al-Istiqama International Arabic Public Speaking Competition 2025

News Release Wednesday, 15 October 2025

Yogyakarta, October 9th, 2025 – Students from the Arabic Study Program, Faculty of Cultural Sciences, Universitas Gadjah Mada (UGM), are actively participating in the Al-Istiqama International Arabic Public Speaking Competition 2025, an international Arabic speech contest organized by the Omani Research and Studies Centre in collaboration with Istiqama Academy and the Arabic Debate Club. This prestigious event, held under the theme of nurturing eloquence, leadership, and global understanding, gathers high school and university students from around the world to showcase their Arabic communication skills.

The competition features two stages: the online qualifying round, where participants submit a 3–5 minute speech video by October 10, 2025, and the semi-final and final rounds, which will take place on November 7, 2025, at the International Islamic University Malaysia (IIUM). Contestants will address one of several themes, such as “Education and Innovation as Our Path to Leadership” and “The Role of Youth in Building a Peaceful Future.” Winners will receive total prizes amounting to RM 20,000 (approximately USD 4,700).

The Arabic Study Program at UGM provides full support for its students joining this competition. The department organizes intensive coaching sessions, helps students record and edit their competition videos, and provides academic and technical assistance to ensure the best possible preparation. This initiative reflects the program’s dedication to encouraging students to hone their public speaking, linguistic, and intercultural communication skills on the international stage.

Through this participation, UGM continues to foster an environment that empowers students to represent Indonesia in global academic and cultural arenas while embodying the values of confidence, eloquence, and collaboration. The Arabic Study Program’s support for this event also aligns with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs)—particularly SDG 4 (Quality Education), SDG 16 (Peace, Justice, and Strong Institutions), and SDG 17 (Partnerships for the Goals)—by promoting global educational collaboration and student empowerment through language and culture.

From Yogyakarta to Buru: Pocket Dictionary & Arabic Learning, UGM’s KKN Innovation in Maluku

News ReleaseSDGs 4: Quality Education Monday, 8 September 2025

Buru Island, July 16, 2025 – Universitas Gadjah Mada (UGM) continues to carry out its Kuliah Kerja Nyata (KKN) program across 35 provinces in Indonesia. One of its inspiring initiatives came from Shang Narendra, affectionately known as Adam, a student of the Arabic Study Program, Faculty of Cultural Sciences, UGM. During his KKN service in Lamahang Village, Waplau District, Buru Regency, Maluku Province, Adam introduced two unique programs: the creation of a pocket Arabic dictionary and simple Arabic language lessons for students.

The pocket dictionary was carefully prepared in Yogyakarta and later distributed during the school orientation period (Matsama – Masa Ta’aruf Madrasah) at MTs Al-Khairaat in Lamahang. The classes targeted first-year students who had never been exposed to Arabic before, aiming to introduce them to basic vocabulary, everyday conversation, and inspire early motivation to learn a foreign language.

The pocket dictionary contains practical, thematic vocabulary across categories such as household, school, environment, body parts, and pronouns, making it easier for students to recall and use words in daily situations. Beyond serving as a learning resource, the dictionary was also given as a keepsake to MTs Al-Khairaat. Interestingly, its usefulness sparked interest from KKN students in other regions, who later helped distribute the dictionary more widely—turning it into one of UGM’s KKN innovations with a broader impact on Arabic language education.

In practice, Adam began lessons by introducing simple greetings and personal pronouns (isim dhamir) through interactive learning media such as colorful slides and posters. The students of MTs Al-Khairaat welcomed the sessions with great enthusiasm, showing remarkable eagerness to learn. Not only did they enjoy the introductory Arabic lessons, but they were also able to immediately practice the new words with their peers.

The program was considered highly successful in sparking student interest to explore Arabic further. The school even expressed hopes for more future visits from UGM’s KKN participants. As a touching farewell, the KKN team received parting gifts from the MTs students before their departure—a heartfelt gesture that reflected the strong bonds formed between the students, teachers, and the local community.
