Universitas Gadjah Mada Collaborates with University of Zurich on University21

Recently, on 2 November 2023, Universitas Gadjah Mada paid a visit to the University of Zurich. During the visit, both institutions discussed ways to build on shared characteristics and strengthen existing relationships. The UGM delegation’s visit to the University of Zurich emphasised the common characteristics of these two universities and explored various opportunities for past and future cooperation.

At the institutional level, UGM and UZH are connected through University 21 (U21). U21 is a unique global network that brings together 29 of the world’s leading research-intensive universities. UGM is the newest member of U21 which joined in early 2021. While UZH has joined in 2017. U21 plays an important role in creating opportunities for student mobility and provides a platform to share approaches to address common challenges and trends in higher education.

For almost ten years, the Department of Cultural Anthropology at Universitas Gadjah Mada (UGM) and the Department of Social Anthropology and Cultural Studies (ISEK) at UZH have established a strong and lasting relationship. This partnership has been initiated and sustained by the dedication of Prof. Dr. Pujo Semedi from UGM and Prof. Dr. Annuska Derks from UZH. Over the years, they have established a strong collaboration that has resulted in various programmes such as PhD student exchanges, research fellowships, writing residencies, and master student exchange programmes. UGM has also played a significant role in the International Summer School series called “Southeast Asia in Motion,” with the latest edition being hosted at UGM in August 2022.

 

Exploring New Ways to Collaborate

Professor Puji Astuti, UGM Director of Partnerships and Global Relations, expressed her excitement for the cooperation that has been established between UGM and UZH. They aim to strengthen this relationship further. They discussed the possibility of offering a double degree programme, which is popular among UZH students. The merging of two university systems can be challenging, but the exchange programme with UGM indirectly provides some solutions.

Meanwhile, ISEK is exploring other collaboration opportunities, such as research projects on alternative education. They are also planning an International Summer School in 2025, where UGM students and faculty will visit the University of Zurich. Molly Fitzpatrick, a researcher at ISEK, believes that this collaboration has been fruitful and hopes that it can be extended to other faculties.

Aulia Rachmi Kurnia Secures 1st Place Victory at DIY Paralimpi Kejurda

The Second Regional Championship (Kejurda) of the National Paralympic Committee (NPC) of Yogyakarta Special Region took place on Tuesday (3/10) and was officially closed on Saturday afternoon (7/10). The closing ceremony took place at the Sports Hall (GOR) of Universitas Mercu Buana (UMBY), Bantul Regency. On this occasion, one of Mahadayas also contributed the winning trophy in the Classic Chess and Rapid Chess sports. It was Aulia Rachmi Kurnia, a student of the Indonesian Language and Literature Study Programme, Faculty of Arts UGM.

Prof. Timbul Haryono Receives the 2023 Cultural Satyalancana Award from the President of the Republic of Indonesia

The Faculty of Cultural Sciences, Gadjah Mada University (UGM) is proud to announce the latest achievement achieved by one of its lecturers. On the peak night of the 2023 Indonesian Cultural Awards (AKI) which took place in Jakarta on Friday, 27 October 2023, the Minister of Education, Culture, Research and Technology (Mendikbudristek) Nadiem Anwar Makarim represented President Joko Widodo (Jokowi). ) to give the Cultural Satyalancana award to the FCS UGM Archeology lecturer, namely Prof Dr H Timbul Haryono, MSc.

AKI is a prestigious event held by the Ministry of Education, Culture, Research, and Technology (Kemendikbudristek) to appreciate individuals, communities, and institutions who have achieved achievements or made extraordinary contributions to advancing Indonesian culture. The theme of the 2023 edition of AKI is “Nursing Harmony”. This theme is very relevant and has deep meaning because it emphasizes the importance of maintaining a balance between humans and nature through the cultural work that has been carried out.

The Satyalancana Culture Award given to Prof Dr H Timbul Haryono, MSc, is a recognition of his dedication to the field of culture. Prof Dr H Timbul Haryono, MSc, has made a significant contribution to the development, maintenance, and preservation of various aspects of Indonesian culture. In addition, the theme “Nurse Harmony” promoted in AKI 2023 emphasizes the important role of all levels of Indonesian society in caring for and maintaining harmony between humans and nature, through cultural practices that preserve local wisdom values.

UGM-UZH Summer School 2022: Southeast Asia in Motion

Monday, 4th of July 2022 marked the start of the Department of Cultural Anthropology, Faculty of Cultural Studies, Universitas Gadjah Mada’s collaborative tandem Summer School in collaboration with University of Zurich and University of Bern, and in attendance of students from UGM, Chiang Mai University, Royal University of Phnom Penh, University of Mandalay, and Ha Noi University (USSH).

During the Summer School, the students will undertake several classes on Ethnographic Methods and the newest trends and developments in the Anthropology of Work, as this Summer School will upheld After Covid? Work and Daily Life in Indonesia as its main theme. Students are then expected to produce ethnographic products, including visual, text, and audio, offering insight into Indonesians’ work and life in Indonesia in relation with their working lives post-COVID. Their research will be advised and supervised by

Pemertahanan dan Pergeseran Bahasa Minangkabau
Dalam Komunikasi Mahasiswa : Sebuah Penelusuran Awal

Indonesia adalah salah satu negara di dunia yang memiliki banyak ragam bahasa daerah. Jumlah bahasa daerah di Indonesia yang sudah didata oleh Badan Pengembangan dan Pembinaan Bahasa kurang lebih 743 bahasa. Sebagian bahasa daerah tersebut adalah bahasa daerah yang tetap eksis dan masih bertahan hingga saat ini karena didukung oleh jumlah penutur yang besar. Namun, ada pula bahasa daerah yang terancam punah karena jumlah penuturnya sedikit dan hanya digunakan oleh kalangan generasi tua. Bahasa Minangkabau adalah salah satu bahasa daerah dari rumpun bahasa Melayu yang memiliki penutur lebih dari 5.530.000 jiwa yang menggunakan bahasa Minangkabau sebagai bahasa ibu khususnya di provinsi Sumatera Barat (kecuali di kepulauan Mentawai). Seiring dengan perkembangan zaman dan arus globalisasi, pemertahanan dan pelestarian bahasa Minangkabau dirasakan semakin penting untuk digalakkan, khusunya di kalangan mahasiswa. Tulisan ini merupakan hasil penelusuran awal mengenai pemertahanan dan pergeseran bahasa Minangkabau dalam komunikasi mahasiswa yang dilakukan di Fakultas Bahasa dan Seni UNP Padang. Tujuannya adalah untuk mengetahui bagimana bentuk pemertahanan dan pergeseran bahasa Minangkabau di kalangan mahasiswa. Pengumpulan data dilakukan melalui kuesioner dan pengamatan langsung. Responden penelitian ini adalah mahasiswa FBS UNP yang dipilih berdasarkan kriteria sebagai penutur asli bahasa Minangkabau. Metode yang digunakan dalam penelitian ini adalah metode deskriptif, dan data dianalisis secara kuantitatif. Kesimpulan dari penelitian ini adalah ditemukannya lemahnya pemertahanan dan pelestarian bahasa Minangkabau di kalangan mahasiswa. Oleh karena itu diusulkan seperangkat strategi untuk pelestarian bahasa Minangkabau yang meliputi; gerakan satu hari berbahasa Minangkabau di kampus, penulisan karya sastra berbahasa Minangkabau, dan komunikasi jejaring sosial berbahasa Minangkabau.
