“Gerakan Warisan Budaya di Yogyakarta – Exploring Heritage Movements in Yogyakarta”

Abstrak:
In the last decade, movements have coalesced across Asia aimed at collective challenges (to elites, authorities or cultural codes) by people with a common purpose and solidarity to protect and conserve heritage. Many of these heritage movements have now risen to prominence at the national scale. However, these movements have for the most part escaped the attention of heritage researchers for two reasons. First, heritage politics researchers have a preference for a site or group case study approach that, while rich in thick description, does not often analyse the internal dynamics and politics of heritage movements. Second, the concerning tendency in the cannon of heritage research to characterise such movements as amateur, antiquarian and nostalgic (Davison, 2000; Hewison, 1987) took the focus of researchers away from the practices of these movements, and researchers have only slowly returned to this topic. This paper provides an account and analysis of the dynamics of heritage movements in Central Java, Indonesia with the two goals of developing an understanding of the reasons heritage movements have grown in prominence in Indonesia, and developing a toolset for heritage movement analysis. In particular, I seek to explore the importance of the political changes in Indonesia and Central Java/Yogyakarta through adapting the concept of Political Opportunity Structures, Collective Action Frames and Transnational Advocacy Networks from social movement theory. The focus of the paper will therefore be on how the internal dynamics of the heritage movement, their relationship with political elites and other groups, and external political circumstances relate to conservation politics.

Ideas of the ‘Arab World’ in Indonesia,Perceptions and Experiences of Labour Migrants and Pilgrims

Abstrak

Setting off from the assumption that the construction of ‘self’ and ‘other’ is a crucial element in the conception of identity, I discuss what role the imagination of the ‘Arab World’ plays for the Indonesian society today. In an increasingly globalized world mobility becomes an important source to generate knowledge about other regions and re-negotiations of morality. Thus, my research focuses on mobile groups, respectively pilgrims and labour migrants, that travel to the ‘Arab World’ and thereby enrich the process of imagining ‘self’ and ‘other’.
Naturally, Saudi Arabia is regarded as ‘holy land’ for Muslims and the pilgrimage to Mecca is central in many peoples’ life. Since waiting lists to join the hajj (major pilgrimage) have become long, travel agencies offer additional trips to the ‘Arab World’, combining the minor pilgrimage (umroh) with site trips to other places.
Besides this booming pilgrimage business and the positive connotations with the ‘Arab World’ being the centre of Islam, the experiences of Indonesian labour migrants (mainly domestic workers) draw a different picture of the region. They experience Arabic culture and customs from within private households and stay much longer than pilgrims. Reports about ill-treatment of domestic workers and human rights violations evoke a more critical view of the respective Arabic countries.
The different travel experiences of labour migrants and pilgrims and the retrospective reflections about it, mirror recent developments of changing ideas of morality and views of the world. By imagining the Arab ‘other’, the Indonesian travelers become more aware of their own identity. Yet, some elements of what is imagined to be Arabic culture are adopted. The journey abroad and the staging of ‘Arabness’ become social, economic and political capital. The research compares different negotiations of ‘Arabness’ and views on the ‘Arab World’ in the context of pilgrimage and labour migration in urban and rural settings in Yogyakarta, Magelang and Madura.

Kuliah teori ini akan memperkenalkan filsuf dan kritikus sastra Rusia yang tidak banyak dikenal, Mikhail Bakhtin (1895-1975). Kuliah akan mengulas gagasan-gagasannya seperti dialogisme, chronotope, heteroglosia, dll., serta sumbangsihnya bagi teori sastra, sejarah, kajian budaya, kajian agama, dan filsafat. Kuliah akan diakhiri dengan contoh pemanfaatan teori Bakhtin dalam kajian sejarah terhadap sebuah teks klasik Sufi-Yahudi dari abad ke-13 Mesir.

Women on the Island of Dynamism: Maritime Communities along the Makassar Straits

Kepulauan Sepermonde terletak di sebelah barat Kota Makassar, Sulawesi Selatan. Kebanyakan perempuan yang tinggal di pulau-pulau batu karang tersebut melakukan kegiatan ekonomi mikro dengan berbagai macam tujuan. Salah satu tujuan yang paling menonjol adalah menabung untuk naik haji. Setelah datang dari tanah suci, perempuan yang berdagang mendapat status sosial dan agama sehingga dapat memperluas peluang kegiatannya. Meskipun belum bersuami, karena sudah naik haji, mereka berani berangkat ke mana-mana, contoh; ke Samarinda, Balikpapan, Pasuruan, Sorong, Timika, Manokwali dan lain-lain di kawasan timur Indonesia. Jika sudah naik haji, perempuan yang berdagang tidak begitu bersemangat mencari jodoh untuk menikah karena mereka sudah memiliki kepercayaan diri menghidupi dirinya sendiri. Beberapa perempuan yang sudah naik haji dan berhasil dalam bisnisnya mempunyai anak buah. Anak buah tersebut ikut berdagang sambil belajar tentang bagaimana cara berbisnis. Selain itu, sebagian orang tua menyuruh anaknya naik haji karena naik haji bagi anak perempuan yang masih muda bisa menjadi daya tarik dalam mencari calon suami yang kaya dan makmur.
